First Time Out With A Shotgun...

Recommended Posts

I went to take my mate to pick up a new shotgun last night and we stopped off at a permission on the way back to try it out.

I've only shot once before on clays 12 months ago. Never been a big shooting fan. Never got into it.

Had air rifles as a kid and still got a Daystate X2 tucked away which never gets used.

I tell you what though, I really enjoyed it. I had 2 shots and got 2 kills. Really chuffed. Definitely want to go again...

that's mighty fine shooting for someone who's never really shot before, where they on the move or did you manage to catch em before they could get started? I started shooting shotguns again about 6 months ago after a break of 20 odd years and couldn't hit Jack, had a morning on clays and hit 6 out of 50 :cray: oh the shame of it !! got myself a second hand Remington 1100 and rough shooting and decoying is my bag, can hit at least 70% in the field, funny how can't hit the clays though?

good on you. what make is the gun?

I'm not sure mate. Bullx100% is the lad I was out with. I'm sure he will comment on here.

Looks like a Hatsan Escort! Those guns get such bad stick, never had a problem with mine! Good shooting, you thinking about getting into it more now?

Yeah, looking at getting my first one soon, already tried clays with a friends gun but it kicked way too much. looking for one that will do clays, pheasants, etc

No it did not kick too much mate, it just did not fit you properly, with a gun that fits you wont even notice magnum loads.

In a nutshell Hutchy yes, try and get to a shop with a proper gunsmith rather than just a salesman, he will advise you on gunfit, which is the most important aspect (after safety obviously) of shotgun shooting, forget chokes, barrel length,(to an extent) and a host of other irrelevant things if the gun does not fit you, and if you find a gun that you really like but it does not fit you quite as well as another you don't like quite as much, have the gun altered to fit you, and you can always use this in a negotiation on price.

finding one which fires 7 and halfs is the problem mate thats why they get so much stick when you find one which cycles 7 and halfs your on to a winner...

ok, so its a case of find somewhere to go and be able to try some then.

not easy round here.

if you are buying a gun of some one mate ask them if you could put a couple of rounds throught it as a gun what doesnt fit is as much use as a car in a bike race
