porkycrook 466
This is the third time of trying to write this but the last two i just rambled so here goes the concise version. My Air Arms s410 carbine was kindly set-up (a while ago now) by Davyt63 and Zini, two people that i am proud to call my friends. The reason i asked them to set-up my gun was that due to my medication (morphine based) for a bad back i twitch all the time. So i was never sure if my gun was set to be accurate as it could be, were my misses down to gun or me. I didn't mind missing but i hated the idea that i may injure my quarry, which is why at that time i was only "plinking" trying to hit twigs or weed heads and the like. They set my gun and found that and recommended using H&NFTT but being as a returning air gunner, after many years away i incorrectly thought that Air Arm pellets would be best for an Air Arm gun. Don't forget i last shot with pellets like the "Huntsman" and the like, so having pellets matched to a particular gun was all new to me anyhow i still had tins of the Air Arms to use up. Well i finally lost patience with my crap shooting and took my gun along with my workmate and gun rest to my permission to set the scope/gun as accurate as i could get. The Air Arm hunter and diablo could only get to shot by shot within a 2" diameter circle even with the gun clamped down. Changed to the H&N FTT straight away gave me pellet on pellet at 30 yards, so one happy bunny. The weekends meet at Rivington was truely a success in all ways. The reason i go to these meets are to meet and make some very dear and new friends. My problems with my back and legs stop me from getting on to the floor so i am unable to enter the competitions or they would be running scared lol. Anyhow i had watched Si and Davy's video (the latest VerminHuntersTV) and have seen them talking about "near and far" but couldn't understand what difference that would make. I bow to both Davy and Si's superior knowledge on all thing ballistic, what with him having all those years experience as a plasterer lol. I am always just happy to watch and to be a reliable and bribable judge at the competitions of the weekend and plink on the zeroing range. At this meet Si was kind enough to do mine aswell as a very good youngster "near and far" readings on both guns. Well i have gone home one happy camper albeit in pain and couldn't wait to try the new settings. Sunday just gone i went down to "hold over farm" or what ever shooting range is close to Davy. Well with a bit of tweeking from Si had me hitting all the targets and reset buttons out to 35 yards. Then Si walked by and spent a couple of minutes chatting and said for me to shoot a clay at 50 yards, and to my amazement using the mil-dots that the near and far suggested and low and behold the clay broke. I spent the next hour or so finding out my aim points, by the time i was done i had managed a 5 pellet group pellet on pellet at 50 yards never thought i would ever be that accurate. Latest report is that last night i wait for it drum role please, i that is me shot a pigeon at a lasered 51 yards one shot in the head not even a twitch. I was so bloody happy that i had to take time to text both Davy and Si. Couldn't stop grinning all night, thanks guys. Sorry for the ramble just imagine what the others looked like. 13 Quote Link to post

Phantom 631
Nice one Roger :notworty: Near and Far? Do I have another lesson to master? I heard Brendan mention it at the meet or is there a simpler explanation, (hold over/hold under/hold over) that would fit my (at this current time feeble) brain?Due to living on the edge of civilisation, I am lucky if I can d/l video of more than 25 seconds, so I'm well behind on VHTV (Hence my please for it to be released on DVD now and again). You know Roger! Now my sexy baby is in her sultry, curvy Bullpup lingerie, it's hard to snipe, so I'm thinking we should have a seperate a non-prone comp? Seated (kneeling although my knees are shot) and standing (feck, I best get some practice in huh?) Time to sleep, night y'a w l ...... 1 Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Nice one roger glad your happy with your set up tony I think the near and far thing is a way to calibrate your scope using chairgun pro, but instead of calculating the drop of the pellets at further ranges, you use a 3/5/10 shot chrono string from the muzzle and then at a given near (muzzle) and far distance, e.g. 55m ? and calculate it that way, taking out any shooter error from the equasion so you get 100% perfect results. sure Si will correct me if I got this wrong? I will be starting again with my hw100kt when I get it, pellet testing, chronoing then calibrating it etc.. its all fun and games, and il be massive by the time I have finished pumping the rifle up god knows how many times.. all the best guys SKoT 3 Quote Link to post

davyt63 1,845
hi Roger as i said in the text "cracking shot" your self & nigel AKA Goz are a prime example,of how a correctly set up rig can shoot "once you do your part" since you both getting back into air guns. i was chuffed when you came over and gently whisperd in my ear "i love you" OH sorry "5 shot group @50 yards" well done buddy. i was at my club last night and met up with Goz & KGBMark, and both were hitting a new bell target i bought,@35 yards with a 10mm dia the SFS ST2 HW97 .22 also hit it the near & far velocity calibration really is pin piont accurate, and works very well with my Hawke SR pro 4-16x50 & HW97 .22 SFS ST2,i had no problem hitting a bell @ 66yards,it got boring. when i get back from my break Si & i are going to do a video showing how to do this type of calibration,it really is worth doing!! i should know,as i have been a vertical mineral application engineer for the last 30 years plus " i always listen to what Si tells me" nice read roger, keep at em! 6 Quote Link to post
porkycrook 466
Aaron you should try it if you have a chrono handy, it really does take out shooter error. The changes the other figures give are what i know believe is just when doing maths at school, the calculation (sum) you have is correct part way through the sum but you get the calculation towards the end goes amiss. Ghillies, it's not just in my head. When i used to miss long range (40 mtrs and beyond) i always thought that it was me and my twitches. But it has given tighter and correct figures for distant targets, when you start seeing target falling that you used to miss you know something you have done has made a real difference. Mikee i will start writing about other shoots and i will try and make them concise. Tony if you have access to a good chronograph that you can shoot over then you can get the new figures needed. I'll PM you what you have to do. Skot i'm over the moon. BigMac it has already accounted for 11 wabbits, but the story can wait till around a campsite fire. Davy my luver you know that i luv you both in a manly way. 1 Quote Link to post
