irishnut 297
I currently have a 17 hmr and a 22lr which I use for rabbits and corvids. I'm wanting to get a 22 magnum for much the same, but more thump at 100-130yrds. Will this be enough of a reason to be granted a third rimfire rifle. Second in .22 and second for longer shots. A local rfd says its not good enough reason. Any thoughts or advice? Quote Link to post

irishnut 297
Good thinking, 22 magnum will be designated as an all purpose night vermin tool. I'm going to apply for it. Can only say its not good enough reason to have it. Quote Link to post

irishnut 297
New Hawke eclipse 30 scope will be great for night shooting Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
Do you really need one ? ... if going that high I'd just opt for possibly a 22 hornet, if you reload I hear they are cheaper to run than the 17HMR Quote Link to post
Apex 3
This is where the law is interpreted badly - reason and need are not the same thing. If you want several of the same calibre to shoot over land that is suitable then there's no reason no to be granted them. Do target shooters get told they are only allowed one target gun? No. Perhaps you want to have the 22lr as a dedicated Night vision scope gun, and the magnum as a daytime gun. Or perhaps you want to start collecting historic functioning 22's - this is "good reason" not "need". Quote Link to post
alan81 110
I don't see the point in getting a .22 mag if you already have a .17 hmr. the .17 hmr is flater shooting, more accurate at longer ranges and just as good to stop rabbit or fox. every one to there own but I think you already have the better gun. 1 Quote Link to post
optelic2 48
You say you want more thump at ranges to 130yds, im no crack shot but have body shot rabbits at 200yds+ with .17hmr with no runners. Thats seems to be plenty of thump? Edited July 20, 2013 by optelic2 Quote Link to post
Guest thebigdog
there is a new round due to come out that looks promising, the .17wsm, id wait to see the prices first, then if viable get rid of the hmr. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Check whether or not your firearms department consider HMR good reason for foxes - its not on the official list (as its too new) and many departments have now withdrawn their approval due to its lack of power. If yours is one of those and you have permission to shoot fox, you could justify the variation application for long range fox and vermin. .22LR is only good for around yds and if HMR isn't fox approved at your dept., then they'd have no choice but to consider it for the fox part of the application. irishnut 297
The reason I want a 22 magnum is because I want it. Just an extra tool. I couldn't give a crap about what I SHOULD get in someone else's eyes. I might also get a 223 or 22-250 in future. No foxes will get shot with this unless at very close range. I don't like c/f for mooching as they are too heavy and carry bit too much power for my sport. Edited July 20, 2013 by irishnut Quote Link to post
irishnut 297
Plus 22 magnum is biggest semi auto i can own Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Whatever your reason for wanting it, you still need to show good reason in the firearms departments eyes and as others have said, that means showing a need that cannot be satisfied with either of your existing calibres. irishnut 297
At 100yrds the 22 magnum has more knock down than 22lr at the muzzle. And quite a bit more than the 17hmr. Its only after 150 that the 17 hmr comes to the fore. Quote Link to post
