3 Rimfire Rifles

17hmr after 150yrds? Not for fox I guess?

You may notice the cost of hmr rifles has dropped recently - this is due to rumours the calibre may be discontinued in favour of the new 17 hornet.

Irishnut you are entitled to whatever rifle you want as long as you have land for it, just need to think of the right reason and present it logically

At 100yrds the 22 magnum has more knock down than 22lr at the muzzle. And quite a bit more than the 17hmr.

Its only after 150 that the 17 hmr comes to the fore.

the .22 magnum wont kill any better than the .17 hmr at 100 yards nor will the .17 hmr kill any better than the .22 magnum at 150 yards, dead is dead no matter how hard the bullet hits.

if its a long rang fox gun you want get a .223. imo your wasting your money getting a .22 magnum but it is your money.

The reason I want a 22 magnum is because I want it. Just an extra tool.

I couldn't give a crap about what I SHOULD get in someone else's eyes. I might also get a 223 or 22-250 in future.

No foxes will get shot with this unless at very close range.

I don't like c/f for mooching as they are too heavy and carry bit too much power for my sport.

No need to have a pissy fit pal, your the one that come on here and asked for our thoughts and advice, the consensus seems to be it would be barely any difference between the 22wmr and the 17 hmr, if you want to step up get a centrefire.

If you don't want to listen to our thoughts and advice then it don't matter to me, but then why come and ask for them to begin with ? :wallbash: just go and apply for whatever calibre you want :gunsmilie:

Energy wmr vs hmr, pretty similar at around 70 yards:

When it comes to trajectory, the .22 magnum is way behind the HMR:

You lads are f**k wits.

Do you read the posts or just guess its contents.

1) this WON'T be used for fox

2) I don't want a c/f (centrefire) as they tend to be heavy.

Maybe I'm bit out on cartridge energy. But at least its something I said

Go ahead and get your .22 wmr then and see how long you use it for before you leave it in the cabinet and go back to using your .17 hmr for all your shooting. I just bought a .223 rem with scope and its no heavier than my cz 452 .22 wmr and a lot lighter than the .17 hmr savage I had.

I see the problem potentially as being one of good reason to own a rifle of another calibre when an existing calibre arguably does the same job but better due to its flatter trajectory and longer range teamed with similar energy figures. If you were looking to shoot larger animals then a WMR would be easily justified but bunnys when you already have a HMR seems like a hard call to me. Could be wrong though.
