I Must Be Mad...

He who dares....

I'll see if I can talk him out of trying to navigate 18 miles of open water.

Well mate after a lifetime of living on the coast and around boat people, I can tell you there's a lot more to it than boat - water - off you go.. Generations of my family have worked on the lifeboat as do many of lads I grew up with do today.. You get a bit of a sense of how wrong things can go out on the water when you have a chat with some of those lads in the pub, and most of it is to do with the inexperienced and ill prepared... Those boys voluntary risk their lives to save others in trouble or otherwise f*****g up at sea..

BREAKING NEWS !!!!   RNLI called out to the Needles after two inept wannabe sailors tried to reach Cowes to enjoy brunch together...........

Glub glub! All went without a hitch. Turns out the sneaky b*****d "mate" of mine used to work for a powerboating team and actually knows a little more than he let on. I thought it was odd when he was

f****n hell. You might joke, but my mate suggested going to Cowes for a pint. when I asked how he would find Cowes on the IOW, he said "How hard can it be?"

Ive done Gosport to the island with someone who knew just as much as your mate.... Going flat out, me and another mate had our backs to the bow when it nosed into a big wave, we got fooking soaked, thought the boat snapped in half,.. Then half way across, right in the path of the pride of Bilbao, we ran out of petrol and had to refuel fast as.. Funny but bum twitchy all the same.

I think i'd be staying at home, you'll be on Real Rescues by Monday :D

Off topic but sea disaster related, chap was kayak fishing near the end of the pier here on Sunday evening, bagging up on mackerel and putting them in a net in the water to keep them fresh...he opened the dry compartment to get his phone out to ring home to say he'd be back soon, no sooner had he finished his call a seal grabbed the net and sent him flying over board, dragging his kayak some 20-30 yards from him before letting go. When he swam to the kayak it was full of water and he couldn't get back in so he drifted for an hour i think it was before someone saw him and he was rescued. The poor bugger is giving it up now!

I know i'm not your dad but be careful Walshie

Well shiver me timbers. You landlubbers really are a lily-livered bunch. :tongue2:

Maybe, it's just running the risk of asking others to risk their lives because some bloke decides to go to sea in his new toy without knowing what the hell he's doing just don't sit right with me mate.. Like Bob said in the previous post, things can go wrong. A big ferry ain't able to do an emergency stop just because some bloke has got something like a loose drift net tangled to f**k around his propeller and don't know what to do to get his engine started and get the f**k out of the way!

In all seriousness if you did happen to run into problems and your pal has no insurance he,ll be in shit ( i was going to say he,ll be in hot water  )................especially this time of year.....id imagine wherever he launches from will want to see some paperwork it aint like the good ol days anymore where you can just sling a boat in the drink and crack on.....

Me and a mate of mine used to back an old Range Rover i had down the ramp and just unhook the boat of that, none of that tying rope to the trailer carry on........until one day my back bumper virtually fell off where the sea water had got at it :icon_redface: ............good luck and have fun.

I'll keep him under control until I'm sure he knows what he's doing. I might not be a sailor, but I like to think I'm not an idiot.

A friend of mine has bought a speedboat with 115 hp outboard. He has asked me if I want to go out on it tomorrow with him from the south coast and maybe "pop over to the Isle of Wight for a beer."

Of course I said yes, but now it turns out he doesn't know how to launch it, drive it, fill it with fuel, or navigate it. :icon_eek: In fact he knows nothing about boats at all - so that makes 2 of us.

At least he got a couple of life jackets and flares with it.

Is he on THL Walshie ? I dare say he,ll be an expert by the time he comes back lol!!

I wasn't suggesting you was mate, I just know the sea ain't the best place to learn from your mistakes because you sometimes don't get to make them more than once..
