potpoacher 27
I have never tried fishing before in any form so I don't have the first clue. I would be fishing on rivers, preferably for fish I could eat. as I said I don't know where to start so will need to be told in fairly simple terms how and what. I roughly know what a lure, pole rod, spinning, barbed hooks and other very simple things are. any information on getting started would help. 1 Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
check out the rules of your local river, some are pricey an some are peanuts, some dont allow spinners, but if they do that will be easiest way to bag a few trout if theres any there, or try trotting worms or even maggots, try an get a tag along to try it first befre you buy all the gear, if you were closer id take you out, im sure somebody will, an if not get a cheap starter set an get out an try it mate, loads a rigs an things in easy to follow diagrams on google images or stick your questions up here, im sure folks wil answer you 3 Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,136
What river are you looking to fish mate? Someone may know the river on here and give you some pointers.. Good post from hot meat... Don't forget your local angling shop, they should be able to give you good advice, you may want to look at buying off eBay or something but personally I like to go into the shop and get first hand information on what's going on, most shops become like a little information centre once you've been in a few times, in general they should be happy to help.. 1 Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
most tackle shops these days will match ebay prices for tackle an rods an things, most are more than happy to help, why wouldnt they, if you decide to stick at it youll be a regular customer, an if you become a tackle tart, then they will benefit its also most local tackle shops who sell the licence, but dont forget your rod licence from postie, nowt will put you off more than an enviroment agency officer turning up an fining you. so stick up a rough location an possible river if you know it, an im sure youll get more help 1 Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,136
That's it mate, with eBay and such like some tackle shops struggle now, I was in ours today I'm always in there at least an hour having a yap... One of the lads gave me a nod on a stretch of river which is fishing, I've just walked it and its alive...I'll be there first light tomorrow.. You'll struggle to get better info than a tackle shop... 1 Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
our tackle shop has a board up for folks to leave places that are doing well, an folsk are even putting up some rigs an flys an other stuff they are making to let folk try them or just to give a heads up, i wouldnt like to own a tackle shop these days, its a pity aswell cos they could an should be booming cos like you say they are 1 central info hub for your local area, an mos owners have a genuine intrest so dont buy in or sell shit, thats why they got tackle shop Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,136
Always thought as a kid I'd end up in the fishing trade some way or another mate, I done work Experiance in a new tackle shop right in the quay, I set up rods and fished to "test them" most days it was perfect... But he went bust lol I ended up working in Exeter Angling Centre for 18 months, I loved it but I just knew it would never pay, I'm still very close to the owners but I ended up on the building sites lol I love the environment in tackle shops, I've worked all over the country and always take my rods, I'm yet to find any tackle shop that hasn't been helpful.... potpoacher 27
sorry to take so long to reply. this is all making good sense to me (I cant normally understand much! ) I had the suggestion made to me to get some real cheap gear and give it a try, something like a rod and a bit of mixed tackle from somewhere like b&m!!!! is this really sensible? also, can u all give me some more info on licences and regulations and all that. I certainly don't want the environment agency turning up!! I would never live it down with my brother being like he is!!! thanks for the replys and keep them coming they are all very helpful. Put the river name up that your like to fish and someone maybe able to give you more info... Quote Link to post
potpoacher 27
the river Waveney and the Suffolk/Norfolk broads. how long do licences, permits etc. last for, or are you just coming to that?!?!? Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,136
Here mate info on rod license... Go on line for any more... No idea on local permits I'd imagine they'd be annual or perhaps you could buy day/weekly permits?? I think the broads are coarse fisheries so you won't be eating much from there, no idea about the river... Quote Link to post
