GSkye 94
Hey guys,I've noticed on a few forums, videos, reviews and testimonials that people always pairing specific pellets with their rifle, is there a reason for this? do specific pellets work better with some brands or calibre sizes? If i've lost you, this may help explain my point. ref: Crosman "The Bone Collector" .22 Cal: Velocity: 950 feet per second (fps) with PBA Platinum, 750 fps with lead. or i've noticed with H&N Pellets, they have some that help to be more accurate upto "x" of distance while hunting or use with with specific barrels types. Am i reading too far into this or is there some truth to using specific pellets and brands for your specific rifle/use?Anything is appreciatedGrae Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Barrals are like finger prints, unique. So given two guns of the same type, model etc one may prefer xbrand of pellets, the other may prefer ybrand or they may both group equally, it's a question of trying different pellets with different head sizes until you get the tightest group of five or more shots, that will be the best pellet for your rifle 3 Quote Link to post
BIG TOM 835
I'm no expert mate but some pellets work great in one rifle and crap in another you have to find the right pellet for the individual gun as with my ultra some one recommended a certain pellet but in my gun they were the worst but each barrel is different it's all trial and error Atb Tom 1 Quote Link to post
AR177 588
barrels can be 'pellet fussy' which means certain brands, shapes, or head sizes will give better results. unfortunately each barrel is unique and what works for one might not work for others there are some general good quality pellets out there such as JSB, AA Field, Daystate, H&N, Falcon, RWS and there are some crap ones out there too. the shapes of the pellet claim to give it certain properties that would be desirable such as extra penetration with pointed pellets or extra range or whatever... its mainly just a gimmick by the manufacturers Just stick to a good quality domed pellet and you wont go wrong Edited July 19, 2013 by AR177 1 Quote Link to post
GSkye 94
Thank you all so far for the help, appreciating the lack of trolls around here with being a newb, it'd be too easy to get me barrels can be 'pellet fussy' which means certain brands, shapes, or head sizes will give better results. unfortunately each barrel is unique and what works for one might not work for others there are some general good quality pellets out there such as JSB, AA Field, Daystate, H&N, Falcon, RWS the shapes of the pellet claim to give it certain properties that would be desirable such as extra penetration with pointed pellets or extra range or whatever... its mainly just a gimmick by the manufacturers So why does "Joe Bloggs" (now a celebrity shooter ) says he loves and promotes XYZ pellets if every barrel is different?Yes, good promotion for the company but surely everyone would know that with the same gun the pellet could still be shoddy? As a keen hunter, i take the pellet heads into consideration: wanting a nice, clean kill. I know theres different pellets for different ways to kill from hollow points to pointed and everything inbetween but i think i'll have to buy some pellets and see what suits my guns well.I do have some Air Arm's for hunting, nice pellets, just hell'a expensive Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Because old Joe is being paid to say that If there was one pellet that fitted all barrels perfectly and grouped equally well, then we would all be buying them. I was trying out H&N FTT in my springer last week at the meet, they were not doing too well and I thought I needed a lot more time reaquainting myself with it, then along came Wurz with some AAF's 5.52mm so I grabbed a few (they were always the preferred choice in that gun) and my grouping came back to how it should be Later I tried a few Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums (they do fairly well in my S200) and the grouping was like a blunderbus! 1 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
No two barrels are ever the same. There is no "absolutely perfect pattern" rifling that reproduces the spiral or lands of the rifling with utmost precision copy for copy from one rifle to another. The rifling of a barrel is, as Tony says, a fingerprint unique to every rifle alone. Hence, you can have two identical spring rifles or PCPs in .22 or .177 whatever your favourite; and the pellet that is perfect in one is not so accurate or wildly out of group in the other. That's why headsizes in pellets is now crucial to maximising your rifle barrel's accuracy. It's why, say, Air Arms Field .22 looks a great pellet for any .22 rifle but, on balance just because it fits the breech, does not follow it will be blistering accurate down the tube! One of the different headsizes this pellet comes in, will be what makes or breaks the accuracy in your barrel. That's why it's a fact of life that with every new rifle we buy, we are back to square one finding the ideal pellet with a perfect headsize for it. Simon 2 Quote Link to post
AR177 588
because lets say 'Joe' is reviewing JSB and he says its good and they get XXXXXXX sales.... he gets free JSB stuff! same for any other brand, if sales are generated then the people who help generate those sales get rewards Same for anything not just pellets and hunting... i bet joe hart has a lifetime supply of head and shoulders for those crappy adverts he is in! Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Take me for example. I always have thought AA Field are good pellets, and they will work quite well in most rifles. and im not sponsored by air arms to be saying that, im just an average joe they might not be 'the best' but they will always be good enough. same with JSB exact, H&N FTT, etc.. get a good pellet and it will work well,. then compare 3,4,5 ... brands of good pellets in the same gun and some will be better than others. then try the exact same pellets in another gun and im pretty sure you will get different results! 1 Quote Link to post
GSkye 94
it just seems stupid having people to promote pellets that could suit only them. Same with gun specs, like the Crosman. Surely if every rifle brand used an industry standard pellet for each calibre, every gun spec would be fair.I like Phantoms "Barrals are like finger prints, unique" comment, i think thats defined everything i needed in 6 words Thanks to everyone, i appreciate everything and that you're all coping with a complete noob Grae Quote Link to post
