A Couple Of Shots This Morning

Recommended Posts

Nice bit of film . but it does sound loud even with the moderator on it ?.

Anything thats supersonic will be loud as its the crack of the bullet through the air creating a small sonic boom rather than the muzzle blast that you tend to hear. That doesn't mean you can't get calibres with quieter or louder muzzles blasts because the noise at the muzzle is down to amongst other things the type and amount of powder and efficiency of the mod. But if you really want quiet, then .22 Subs are your only real option.

The HMR in the video doesn't sound particularly loud to me, not that you can tell from a video anyway.

But for comparison, my friend has a .22 rimfire. If he puts a sub through it, its quieter than the pre-charged moderated air rifle I used to own (!) If he puts a .22 HV through the same rifle and moderator, it echoes round the valley for miles! I literally reckon you could hear it from 2 miles in open country, no problem.

Bottom line, you canny change the laws of physics and that includes bullets breaking the sound barrier. Subs are the only way to go really quiet.

If you're thinking of a HMR, then I'd advice you find someone with one or a gun dealer willling to give a demo and listen to it being shot 1st. Also don't rule out the new .17 WSM as its reputed to be quite quiet at the muzzle despite the speed. However, bullet noise will always be a problem.
