Thank you all for putting a good topic up and all answering with tidy answers i am starting a young dog she has basically been a pup for the last 11 months running with the terrier picking up the odd bolt in the day i have taken her lamping twice first time 2 weeks ago let her watch my mates dogs run she looked very very keen constantly watching me as if too say can i have a go she had 2 runs 1 easy one she cought with ease then she when back on the slip let her watch for a bit more she spotted one at the end of the beam that she wanted not a easy run by any means very torn weather i should slip her she seemed keen so let her run she cought that too. i was more than impressed to say the least.

second time she was like a pro 5 runs all with big time gaps between so she didn get over worked cought 4 of them so looking forward too getting a few more now

shaun the pup off of lofty is it out of luke and sally?i give my pups loads of daytime rabbits with the terriers and lamp them early on selected runs then bring onto hares a little early than you should in the season like now [only pups] on small land if that is how your pup is bred mate was with the brother to it the weekend an another pup off of luke back to a bitch called baz [i think] from wales

ive got nothing but praise for mine at the moment leec she is a very placid bitch with a nasty streak to boot when needed :boxing: , she's around the 26 inch mark red with a smooth coat, my pal joe has a dog which you wouldnt think was its brother, its around the 27 + mark really rough coated but he's very nimble and agile for his size and clever, now the other bitch i got off baz she is 24 inches smooth brindle and like a coiled spring very excitable.

as soon as i get a fire lead for my camera i will get some pictures up of them.

over the summer ive been lucky around here with plenty of rabbits just walking distance from the house and there's been alot of mixyi aswell so the pups have been getting there fair share of stuff.

but there wont be trips to the fens till the back end of october thats if the ground is ok for them , the farthest they will be going is quick trips down the a1 and some permision ive got up the dales for the rabbits

im starting the season with a couple of young dogs which when they are right in my mind will be run on hares but also used from general mooching to lamping.

what i would like to hear is peoples different methods at starting and entering there young dogs from exercising to running there first rabbit.

pleasing no bitching on this one, i want everyone to have a open mind on this

i would never run a dog before 9 month still a pup before that

Mostly coursing I do. Sucess is the name of the game with pups, a dropped rabbit at around eight months, and then at around a year or so when the dog has matured , a stung hare. I try to dictate the tempo of hunts(not often sucessful) but the young dog is only slipped on a clean bit of ground, with a dog who is bona fide and with pips, a dog who knows the story with obstacles and the wiles of a hare, has worked so far  Try to avoid rabbits with a coursing dog, think it makes them cute to ditches, I like coursing dogs to be conditioned to the fact their true quarry runs a long time.

he,s very keen to go, he has done most of my neighbours cats,

:icon_eek: Um, slightly off topic but what do you mean by 'done' your neighbours cats?

This is a great thread, as I'm not really working Griff in the technical sense, but I do like to go out mooching about. So far he's only been on rough ground, in the woods etc. Seems keen when were out and follows his nose around a lot. Hoping to get out soon and get him coursing with his sister, who is already working and doing well. Hopefully he'll pick it up from her 'cause I've never done any of this before
