NEWKID 27,182
Im guessing it was an old boy telling you this.....it used to be the same with pike ....of any size chuck em up the bank they eat all the fish pike /eels/perch/zander all play a vital part in balance of a fishery, yes they do eat some spawning fish ,eggs and fry, they also clear up dead/dying/diseased fish that would otherwise be left to rot....cant see taking one for the pot doing any damage, but I would put the rest back ATB I was fishing the tidal Exe years back, I hooked a salmon on the stick float and the thing went Beserk up and down the river me chasing behind like a mad man until enventually it snapped me up.. Well as I sat back a voice behind me said " unlucky mate" I turn round and there's a salmon angler and I can see he's carrying a fish, it was silhouetted so couldn't see what... I ask him what've you caught there, he says I don't know mate I'm taking it home for the cat!! I clamber up the bank and it's a chub, must be at least 5lb, I call him a prick and tell him how old a fish like that would be etc... He didn't have a clue, thought he was doing the river some good by killing it... Absolute twat IMO Unless your going to eat it ( eels, trout, salmon even mackerel, bass etc) put if back... 5 Quote Link to post

Dave Smith 2
As already mentioned previously it's prohibited to fish for Eels in Scotland, and illegal to take them for the pot by rod and line in England and Wales. They're cited as critically endangered. more info on Eels and Eel fishing at http://www.nationalanguillaclub.co.uk 1 Quote Link to post
