Tomo, pulling a sicky on the hottest week of the year would be feckin genius but a heatwave through a window is bloody awful... :cray:

Now, next question on bad backs... In the past i've occasionally used a Chiropractor for a general MOT, like I do with the dogs, always found 'em a great help BUT would anyone think they could help this situation, as has been said, I don't wanna get fobbed off with drugs BUT if those an complete rest will do the trick..???

Years of wear & tear has left me with 2 degenerated discs. I'm on a daily cocktail of drugs (dyhydrocodeine, gabapentin and naproxen) and 6 monthly spinal injections. At one point a couple of years ago I was virtually crippled, barely able to move and needed help with everything. I am now able to get about and go to work (gardening) a couple of days a week. Even though I am a lot more aware of my limitations it is so easy to overdo it.

IF you take my advice keeping mobile with a bulging disc is a recipe for disaster  take it from someone who knows the hard way,I tried to keep mobile and ended up bursting the disc :bad: if you think youre in pain now..........take it easy, lie down not sit down, yes it is a nightmare  but its the quickest way to let it settle down again. When my disc burst I couldn't work for months,Im self employed so was earning nowt ,no sick pay... :bad: ATB for a quick recovery

Never had a problem with my back, apart from jarring it lamping, which over some ground can be a bit often but nowt that didn't fix in a day or two.

So at 46, in decent enough health, packed in cigs (not that I was a heavy smoker anyway) bought a mountain bike and loving it, walk miles, go to the gym regular etc, I started to get a sharp stabbing lower back pain about two weeks ago. Similar to when I've jarred it but I know I ain't done nothing direct. My only real problem is that I, like my old man was, ain't much of a sitting down bloke and would rather be up an constantly doing...

Some days have been good, some bad, where I'd go to do sommat and almost drop to the deck with sharp pain.

So yesterday, after 'Ox's shit watch' was doing my head in (see other thred), I decided to go to me mams to cut her lawns (4!). Now my back was feeling a bit dodgy in the car, its a half hour run and by the time i got there I was feeling a bit 'uncomfortable' but there I was an lawns may as well be done. :duh:

The pond needed a top up an re-fresh so I put the hose in before I started, then cracked on.

An hour in and two lawns done the pond was up to level, so turn off the hose an bent to start reeling in. It was then that it struck, just about the worst pain I've had and I cried out and dropped to the deck... Honestly the pain and panic was horrendous but I managed to crawl up the wall to eventually stand, shaking. Scared the shit out my old mum (an myself if I'm honest). Foolishly, I decided to drive home quick, somehow didn't want to linger in case I couldn't go. What a fecking drive... Had to stop the car four times, twice to vomit. :bad:

Phoned the Mrs and she came home an took me to the hospital. Pain almost crippling and running right down my right leg to my foot. After triage' a big Fraulein Doctor seen me and to be honest was spot on, I had to do a piss test to see if I could go and they asked me all sorts of questions about incontinence, because if you get that with the pain your fecked... But she went through what to expect and came up with the best line a Doctor could.. "Wash them (the drugs) down with beer or whatever you drink, you should relax in a happy haze for it to pass.."!!! :D

So she gave me a week off, (at least) in her words a 'cocktail' of drugs, including Diazepam to totally relax me and that I should try to walk, bits at first but build up.

So i'm writing this slowly in a nice blur of drugs, sat bolt upright (its killing me!!). I've walked, or rather 'minced' down the garden. Semi side on, with a limping right leg and very gay arms, all I need now is a Panama hat and cravat to look like Quentin Crisp, I hope the neighbors don't see...!!

Fun in the sun it deffinatley ain't... So if i'm on here a bit this week... Tough!!!

prob nerve damage you've done , I've carried loads of the years weather it been beasts or a heavy Bergen (a Para Bergen is a lot heavier than a hat Bergen lol )never had a problem ,then one day in gym not giving it 100% concentration squatting with a silly weight I felt a twinge and ever since I've had nerve problems ,with pain in my left foot if I wear boots ,it gets worse If i and go over 17 1/2 stone so I don't lift heavy now and keep my weight around 17 at heaviest and its manageable ,I went through stage where I kept popping a disk so went private had MRS scan and confirmed it was nerve problems ,paid 800 load of jabs and touch wood never popped a disc since

Definetly see a chiropractor, they will asses how bad it is and advise you accordingly  the first time mine went I hadn't walked right for a fortnight ,really bad limp and stooped over, had first 30min session and came out walking pretty normally :boogy: they will also advise you on the best way to speed up recovery

thats a tough one Bosun, the people that i talked to when i was in recovery were split pretty much down the middle, on chiropracter / osteopath intervention.

some absolutely swore by them and highly reccomended them, the downside for me appeared to be many people saying that once you start with one, you stay with one, ie they become the only thing that will shift the chronic pain (episodes if you like) when it does eventually come back, as it definately will.

some said that they were effectively tied into that treatment for the rest of there lives as once they got relief with that treatment there was no going back.

i never went down that route.

it can be quite expensive too.

i'd do some reading up and make your own mind up, all depends on your paticular condition at the end of the day, and also your pain threshold, we dont all tolerate pain levels the same way.

Nobody seems bothered that Rutger Haurer has died? I don’t really give a shit either but had become accustomed to finding out when famous people had popped their glogs when logging onto THL. Very sloppy.
