I'm early 30s and mines been f****d for years now. Its normally just an ache which is annoying more than agonizing especially when I'm trying to sleep but every now and again I'll get a twinge that drops me. I've tried the drugs off the doc which might as well have been smarties and I've had physio and chiropractic treatment too. The chiropractor sorted it the first time I went and I felt a foot taller walking out of there but it keeps coming back due to the job I do and the vibrating machine I have to drive.

Chiros are ok for low back spasm, in studies have similar outcomes to massage, but be careful if there is damage as the last thing you need is a herniated disc yanking.

Don't let them near your neck though.http://edzardernst.com/2013/06/strong-evidence-for-a-causal-link-between-chiropractic-treatment-and-adverse-effects/

Naproxen Is The Only Thing That Has Kept Mine At Bay For Any Length Off Time , Osteopath Was Using Once A Month And Before The Next Session It Was Bck So Short Term Solution At £50 A Pop , The Money Wasnt The Issue Just That It Wasnt Changing After Over A Yr So Back To Dr And He Gave Me The Naproxen And Touch Wood It's Helped Enormously ;)

I initially thought that things had finally caught up to me in my 40s and i was now paying the price. The price for over 20 years of contact sports, and being young, fit and stupid just shrugging off injuries. Then again since i became poorly i have learned a lot of these conditions can be heredatory, and early detection is almost impossible.

Its only when your doctor decides to send you for a CT or MRI scan that these things can be detected, but doctors are wary to send you as these tests take a lot of money out of the doctors/practice budget. If you really think you may have a serious back condition, then going private to get the scans quickly is an option.

The private hospital will send all the results to your doctor for you,and he can take it from there with the findings and put you in touch with a specialist. If you cant afford to go private which would be between £1500 and £2000 thats a pity, but if you can you may save yourself years of unneccasary suffering!.

I knew it was more than that so early 2007 paid for my own MRI Scan which showed 2 discs were fecked and needed removing

Nov 2007 had a double spinal fusion ( Mr Mohoj Krishina ) North Tees and his team did the work.

How long was you out of action Max ?.....I was told i,ll probably end up having to have a spinal fusion op at some point....L4 and L5 i think it was......does it limit your mobility much and do you get any pain at all now ?......spoke to a few people who have had it with different outcomes.

Another thing Bosun one of the biggest causes of back pain in the middle aged is the gym, sit up type exercises and chin ups can cause problems, another is biking on a badly set up bike get to a bike shop and get bikes set up for the rider or google how to do it your self.

Gnash in all seriousness go to one of Mahoj Khrishnas seminars at North Tees Hospital you will find him on net.

He is as good as a spinal surgeon in the world.

Luckily he was on my doorstep.

Pre Op it got to the point i was fecked

So for me the Op was a No Brainer.

Post Op when i woke i just couldnt feel my back in the area the op was performed.

I made the mistake of watching one of Khrishnas online vids of a Op

By fook they are rough lol but thats how its done

So yeah you will be sore but nothing you cant handle

Your given meds to help with pain ect

The worst part was when nurses / staff wanted to sit me up same afternoon ( i had Op 9am )

I told then in no uncertain terms not a chance.

It felt like my back would snap in half.

They had to put pumps on my legs to ward off thrombosis as i wouldnt sit up.

Next day they tried again, same result i told em to fook off politely

Morning after they tried again and it was painful to say the least.

I told them to leave the room and id try and get myself up off the bed at my own pace.

I sort of manovered around and useing my arms managed to sit on the bed sideways.

All of a sudden you would think someone had thrown a bucket of water over me and i felt myself going so i pulled the panic cord nurses ran in and caught me before i keeled over ( it was a weired feeling )

That night specialist came in and said if i got up again and walked up and down about 10 stairs outside i could go home next night.

I was out of bed and away.

When i got home it was baby steps up and down corridor every few hours.

A week in i got some 5lb dumbells and worked my arms and shoulders.

Then i got my trainers on went down the kennels led a Greyhound up and walked one of them maybe quater mile per day and built it up.

Started driveing sooner than recomended and got myself to the swimming pool and just walked backwards and forwards in the water for a week or two then week 3-4 started swimming gently.

Then end of Jan i fooked off to my mates in the sun for 3 months, swam every day for a month and walked ect

Then i started hitting a few bags and pads

then the last month all of the above and very light weights

Came home went for my 6 monthly scan and surgeon nearley fell off his chair

He said he had never seen a fusion on a Xray show up so white ( usually grey )

I put it down to 3 month in the sun ' i really do.

Now my back aint perfect but its a 100% better than pre op

Cant touch my toes any more lol

But all's good apart from i cant weight train ( i only went light anyways ) as my right rotator cuff is torn and giving me bad pain with a any slight movement it just collapses

Feels like ligaments grinding ect and some terrible cracking grinding noises coming from my shoulder.

Been told op to stitch the tear only cure but im contemplating maybe cortosone jab and binning the weights for treadmills, crosstrainer, bikeing, situps , leg workouts, i can train bi's and tri's ok

and maybe braying the bags once or twice per week.

I really dont know ?

Thats interesting .....a few different people ive spoke to 1 sounded similar to you about 6 months and he was back as strong if not stronger than before.............the other barely saw any improvement at all but he,s a lazy f****r and just sat still for months afterward................seems like the key is to get mobile as soon as you can....and stay mobile..............i imagine a lot of it as well is mental in terms of having the confidence in your back i just dont have the confidence in mine i once had and id love to have that again.............but maybe thats just part and parcel of becoming an old b*****d

Great to hear your story anyway and onwards and upwards

Nobody seems bothered that Rutger Haurer has died? I don’t really give a shit either but had become accustomed to finding out when famous people had popped their glogs when logging onto THL. Very sloppy.
