Ow..! Me Fookin Back...

Recommended Posts

I was only talking about this on Sunday.

Is there anyone over the age of 40-50 who doesn't suffer with their back?

I have this theory, people that have played hard sports or hard physical graft often suffer back probs later in life and people that do very little physical exercise/strength training often suffer too. But do those that live a relatively physically easy life but keep themselves fit and strong with gym etc? These people are not hammering themselves with high strain sport or graft but still keeping their body and back fit strong and healthy in a controlled manor. Well that's my theory anyway.........

My theory is that athletes/sportsman who have put a lot of stress through their back over many years......will actually have better longevity in terms of wear and tear of the discs............than somebody who has an easy life with little or no stress to the back...........most back problems will be disc related.....if you get to 40-50 without actually having a direct injury to discs its going to be degeneration of them that causes problems,ie wear and tear........a back that is constantly stressed ( through weight training ) for example....will have far better lubrication between the discs than a back that is just sitting in an office chair or drivers seat say......its like a car gearbox that gets used every day for years will be in far better nick than a gearbox thats left sitting in a car that never moves......the one that never moves may have less miles on the clock but it will eventually seize through lack of use !..........

Bosun you could do a lot worse than find yourself a good chiropractor.....even if its only for advice on maintaining as healthy a back as possible in future......wish you the best anyway its a shitter when it does play up i feel for you.

Thanks for the reply's one and all

Especially Simo's 'diagnosis'... No shit Sherlock..!

Tomo, pulling a sicky on the hottest week of the year would be feckin genius but a heatwave through a window is bloody awful... :cray:

Now, next question on bad backs... In the past i've occasionally used a Chiropractor for a general MOT, like I do with the dogs, always found 'em a great help BUT would anyone think they could help this situation, as has been said, I don't wanna get fobbed off with drugs BUT if those an complete rest will do the trick..???

thats a tough one Bosun, the people that i talked to when i was in recovery were split pretty much down the middle, on chiropracter / osteopath intervention.

some absolutely swore by them and highly reccomended them, the downside for me appeared to be many people saying that once you start with one, you stay with one, ie they become the only thing that will shift the chronic pain (episodes if you like) when it does eventually come back, as it definately will.

some said that they were effectively tied into that treatment for the rest of there lives as once they got relief with that treatment there was no going back.

i never went down that route.

it can be quite expensive too.

i'd do some reading up and make your own mind up, all depends on your paticular condition at the end of the day, and also your pain threshold, we dont all tolerate pain levels the same way.

The fella I went to advised me to keep going ,but I never did....if it flares up I go back,if it doesn't I don't,like all things in life we learn from our mistakes and I m now careful all the time

Had serious spasms and pains in my back for a few months, just started, no warning, the wife bought a new bed, quite expensive quality mattress, the difference in a week was unbelievable and no pain at all inside of six weeks.

I think it's advised to renew your mattress every so often anyway. I honestly wouldn't have believed the difference if I hadn't experienced it.

I understand that Gnash, some sort of resistance training programme that involved good core stuff and compound exercises like deadlift, power cleans, squats, pull ups, bench etc will keep ya body tip top and help prevent all manor of mid life aches and pains so common with modern life. I guess what i was getting at is these lads that keep themselves active, strong and generally fit, but play sport at a reasonably competative level or even just graft hard in a very manual job often suffer in their 40s and 50s. Could be down to many things but I just made my own conclusions and supposed maybe these types of chaps although strong and fit will hit injuries more commonly than the more sedate types that still keep to a controlled strength and fitness programme. Just a hypothesis like from all the 40 plus' that I know.......... I may be flat out wrong.

Guess it could also be down to them hammering it hard while in their teens, 20s and early 30s then coming away from their sport and loosing their shape letting their body weaken to all the injuries. If they kept up with a light gym programme of some description maybe they wouldn't feel half of these ailments?

On that note, the temps dropped enough for me to give the barbell some abuse and hopefully keep myself from bashing out a similar thread in 20 years!

Nobody seems bothered that Rutger Haurer has died? I don’t really give a shit either but had become accustomed to finding out when famous people had popped their glogs when logging onto THL. Very sloppy.
