fractured my spine (T10) and compressed the T9 and T11 verterbrae just over 10 yrs ago now, fall from height at work, 9 days completely imobile in a specialist unit, then 4 months with a top half body brace.

to be fair i've made a decent recovery and lead a normal, but i dont even contemplate lifting really heavy or awkward loads, gives me a bit of jip if i sleep on a shit surface and sometimes in the winter, i can feel when the weather's gonna change, same as most folk that have broken bones can i think.

if you do suffer from a bad back a bit of planning and a realisation of your limits, will allow you to manage the condition.

as has been said, general fitness will help you too.

Take it easy but keep going as much as you can, take the tablets and give it time, bit of luck it will settle ok. Once it has just bare it in mind in the future and listen to your body its a few years to go yet so look after it.

Ps packing up smoking is the best thing you ever did!

Paul, nobody else has reached this diagnosis, but it's because you're an old git  I can totally sympathise though, I damaged mine about 15 years ago training manwork dogs, occasionally goes, went yesterday when I was hovering the car, i'm also now walking like a gay John Wayne and taking Naproxin...........

I've had a bad back for years. Doctor says I need to rest up for a month or two and take pain killers! WTF!! I've no time for that. It wakes me at night sometimes, it feels like a trapped nerve. It tends to go long enough for me to drop off when I pull my legs up as in the foetal position. I have to have a cushion behind me when I drive it's sometimes that bad. I've been putting a fence line up today in work so tomorrow when I get out of bed it'll be murder. I sympathise with anyone who has a bad back...Apart from the dossers who claim to have one.

I have had to take early retirement as my spine started to fuse together several years ago.Mine is 40% fused from the waist, its called Ankylosing Spondulitis.I also have another condition called manubriosternal arthiritis and get calcium deposits between the whole of my ribs, making it harder to breath as there is no chest expansion.Add to that a tumour called a Pheocromacytoma on my adrenal gland and jobs a goodun :victory: .

I agree backpain at its worst will drive anyone to distraction, especially if your back goes into a spasm.Ive spent the last 2 years on cocktails of allsorts of drugs, including 70mg of Morphine a day.

Best advice i can give is always stay mobile even in pain, and dont let your body seize up!.If you dont let anything affect you mentally then you are 75% there.

I was only talking about this on Sunday.

Is there anyone over the age of 40-50 who doesn't suffer with their back?

I have this theory, people that have played hard sports or hard physical graft often suffer back probs later in life and people that do very little physical exercise/strength training often suffer too. But do those that live a relatively physically easy life but keep themselves fit and strong with gym etc? These people are not hammering themselves with high strain sport or graft but still keeping their body and back fit strong and healthy in a controlled manor. Well that's my theory anyway.........

You may have a point,,, I'm 46, and have no problems anywhere,, back is strong knees are ok,, I don't do a physically demanding job,,, but I do go to the gym and lift weights,,anywhere between 4 and 6 days.

Hope it's nothing to serious bosun,,, although I suspect you fancied having a week of work,,, and though a sicky,,lol

Nobody seems bothered that Rutger Haurer has died? I don’t really give a shit either but had become accustomed to finding out when famous people had popped their glogs when logging onto THL. Very sloppy.
