Ow..! Me Fookin Back...

Recommended Posts

Never had a problem with my back, apart from jarring it lamping, which over some ground can be a bit often but nowt that didn't fix in a day or two.

So at 46, in decent enough health, packed in cigs (not that I was a heavy smoker anyway) bought a mountain bike and loving it, walk miles, go to the gym regular etc, I started to get a sharp stabbing lower back pain about two weeks ago. Similar to when I've jarred it but I know I ain't done nothing direct. My only real problem is that I, like my old man was, ain't much of a sitting down bloke and would rather be up an constantly doing...

Some days have been good, some bad, where I'd go to do sommat and almost drop to the deck with sharp pain.

So yesterday, after 'Ox's shit watch' was doing my head in (see other thred), I decided to go to me mams to cut her lawns (4!). Now my back was feeling a bit dodgy in the car, its a half hour run and by the time i got there I was feeling a bit 'uncomfortable' but there I was an lawns may as well be done. :duh:

The pond needed a top up an re-fresh so I put the hose in before I started, then cracked on.

An hour in and two lawns done the pond was up to level, so turn off the hose an bent to start reeling in. It was then that it struck, just about the worst pain I've had and I cried out and dropped to the deck... Honestly the pain and panic was horrendous but I managed to crawl up the wall to eventually stand, shaking. Scared the shit out my old mum (an myself if I'm honest). Foolishly, I decided to drive home quick, somehow didn't want to linger in case I couldn't go. What a fecking drive... Had to stop the car four times, twice to vomit. :bad:

Phoned the Mrs and she came home an took me to the hospital. Pain almost crippling and running right down my right leg to my foot. After triage' a big Fraulein Doctor seen me and to be honest was spot on, I had to do a piss test to see if I could go and they asked me all sorts of questions about incontinence, because if you get that with the pain your fecked... But she went through what to expect and came up with the best line a Doctor could.. "Wash them (the drugs) down with beer or whatever you drink, you should relax in a happy haze for it to pass.."!!! :D

So she gave me a week off, (at least) in her words a 'cocktail' of drugs, including Diazepam to totally relax me and that I should try to walk, bits at first but build up.

So i'm writing this slowly in a nice blur of drugs, sat bolt upright (its killing me!!). I've walked, or rather 'minced' down the garden. Semi side on, with a limping right leg and very gay arms, all I need now is a Panama hat and cravat to look like Quentin Crisp, I hope the neighbors don't see...!!

Fun in the sun it deffinatley ain't... So if i'm on here a bit this week... Tough!!!

Oof, not good mate! Hope it's something that will pass rather than need surgery or something.. Sounds like they thought it could be kidney related at first, with them asking you questions about your waterworks?

I was playing 5 A-side a good few years back now and canny mind what happened but all i remember was a wee crack in my back. Went and sat down for a couple of minutes....felt better so put it down to a twinge and played out the remainder off the game. Was walking of the park and started to play up....2 min walk to the car was then agony and getting in the car was worse. Trying to put the clutch in was horrendous......So it was a long so drive home without much gear chnages.... :D

Got home, went straight to bed for a lie down. Next day couldnt move..........had about 3/4 days in my bed. I could stand or lie down but it was the bending bit in between. Hospital gave me 2 types of drugs adding up to 16 tablets a day.......they did help my back but they started to effect my guts. And the last thing you want to be doing is fecking running to the toilet.... Anyway it eased off after about a week, just hope it never returns...... :censored:

The pain going down the hip/buttock /leg is the sciatic nerve , can be severe enough to make you vomit or pass out ,make sure you get the original cause sorted , because the NHS has a tendency to just fob you off with pain relief and muscle relaxants , if you don,t get the cause sorted it is recurring ATB

Bad backs are the wierdest things,

I put mine out a couple of weeks ago. It was just a bit sore but for the next few days whenever I walked the dog I'd go maybe a quarter mile and then my calves would just lock up, and I'd end up walking 50 yards and having to rest for a couple of minutes. At it's worst my usual hour and a half stroll took three and a half and I was thinking blocked arteries and all that crap, but touch wood I'm back to normal again.

I was only talking about this on Sunday.

Is there anyone over the age of 40-50 who doesn't suffer with their back?

I have this theory, people that have played hard sports or hard physical graft often suffer back probs later in life and people that do very little physical exercise/strength training often suffer too. But do those that live a relatively physically easy life but keep themselves fit and strong with gym etc? These people are not hammering themselves with high strain sport or graft but still keeping their body and back fit strong and healthy in a controlled manor. Well that's my theory anyway.........

You could be right there.. It's probably something to do with keeping the muscles fit and strong enough to support the spine but not getting them too tired to do so as you go about your daily business at the same time .. :hmm: It's similar with my knees - When I had to give up plastering because the pain was getting intolerable, my leg muscles wasted and the rate of bone wear increased and so the pain got worse..

Nobody seems bothered that Rutger Haurer has died? I don’t really give a shit either but had become accustomed to finding out when famous people had popped their glogs when logging onto THL. Very sloppy.
