whippet 99 2,613
It's not gonna be cooler than 24 down here for the next 10 days, I don't even get why people even walk their dogs in that kind of heat never mind take them to a show Exactly my point mate ... In weather like this I have to alter my working day ... I will be netting up by 5am and finishing by noon so that the dogs and ferrets can work a full shift but stay on the sensible side of the weather ... That said I will still have a couple of drums of water in the back of the truck to soak the animals if it gets to warm in the morning ... A few nice drinking troughs on tomorrow's job though so the dogs will be fine ......... I tend to favour the rail way embankments on a night shift in this heat under flood light............ edit too say this is looking abit hippicritical here , you wondering why people stand in a ring in this heat for how ever long there class is , maybe 30 - 45 mins.....max and your working dogs up till mid day ........... its not a job its a way of life......... lol is it true that you strap ice packs to the dogs in this weather.......? Kay 3,709
My 2 havent shifted out of the house for a week other than the yard , theres no way I could carry a greyhound back if it collapsed from heat exhaustion so there staying in the house until its much cooler
pip1968 2,490
while the weathers this hot you either have to be up and out really early or just take them out to empty them selves with short walks a couple of times a day then put them back in the shade with plenty to drink and if its to hot i always bring them in the house with the doors open
whippet 99 2,613
you take the dogs out early morning like they do the hounds and they be fine,..............exscuses , excuses.......mine were across the fields this morning,.......
bracken boy 584
You can get dogs out in this weather but its all bout being sensible in short spurts.. No running just 10 mins pee breaks and a fan when they come back.. 100 percent safe just dont take them out..
johnny boy68 11,726
Way too hot to be traipsing your dogs around a game fair/show................I keep mine in the car.
vixen 528
mine are still taken out very early morn or late at night, and as for taking them to a show .......... took a couple of terriers to scone on sunday and they were absolutely fine sat under the shade of a big tree all day with plenty water, some people just don't have any common sense if they would walk their dogs in this heat or have them sat round a ring at a show with no shade, we are not ALL idiots !!!!
lapin2008 1,587
I walk mine after 10 each night for a couple of hours until dark to see what is about but even then its pushing it a bit with the heat if they manage to find something to chase. Never been to a show in my life, the impression I get about them though is that they will not be my cup of tea. Maybe I will make the effort next year to get along to one (been saying that for years and the Yorkshire one this year was only 5 miles from my house) just to see what the craic is as its probably not fair of me to judge them without first hand experience. I would never want to take any of my dogs to one though
The one 8,483
Mine are not getting walked till 11pm at night but you still see folk dragging them round in the middle of the day
Born Hunter 17,780
I don't tend to take it too seriously, never entered the ring and never will, maybe with kids one day....... The only shows worth going to in my opinion are the local hunt shows. If I'm only going up for an hour or two to catch up with a few mates etc I might take a dog and let her have a few dips in the lake or river, for animals that rarely see more than the odd dog or person I don't think it does any harm to get them amongst a bit of madness now and again. I also think it's nice to see what types other people are keeping, be a bit shite if I went to a Hunt kennel open day and no fecker had brought a dog!
B.P.R 2,798
been to one show this year.... except the yorkshire....where i didnt bother entering the show or the racing.... the one show i went to....was a couple of weeks ago....and the weather was cool..... however....personally.....i think some of the shows are good and worthwhile... a bit of fun....dont take it serious at all.... and with a bit of common sense...the dogs can be be fine..... for some people these shows may be a highlight of their week....older folk etc.... baw 4,360
Mad dogs and Englishman I'd rather be given a ferret net than a rosette, don't understand the logic of shows. Some of the best working lurchers I've seen are also the ugliest.
theman 17
i love the shows and theres some good working dog men at them, but in this heat i think i would give it a miss, but good luck to the people who go and keep our sport going,
