The Great Lolly Ice Stick Conundrum....

Recommended Posts

Damn it's hot...! Not that I'm complaining, the older I get the more I enjoy my summer but yesterday I was stuck in work, on the hottest day of the year and missed both the sun and the Scot winning at Wimbledon...

But it was the phone call from home yesterday that has prompted me to write this.

Tracy called, to say that she 'thinks' Ox, my fat headed idiot of a dog, 'may' have swallowed a Lolly Ice ('Ice Lolly' for none Scousers!) stick, whole...!

Tracy had given my 3 year old daughter Lilly-May, who was having a ball in the paddling pool all day, a Lolly Ice. A little later Tracy asked had she ate it and if so where's the stick? To which Lilly-May replied that she had given Ox a bit of it because he was hot and he ate it, ALL...!!

Now Tracy started a bit of worry and searched high an low for either the stick or the chewed remains of it but found nothing and thats when she phoned me....

So now, like that Guinness advert 'I wait....'

Maybe she 'thought' he swallowed it, maybe he did but chewed it into pulp, either way no evidence?

Though, the worlds most stupid dog does have a nasty habit of taking edible things gently and gulping 'em down whole...

It would be just my luck to have the most injury prone mutt of my hunting career, a dog that has survived some horrific injuries die by the hands of a 3 year old...!

Now, I could fly him direct to the vet but I just don't know if my daughter really did see it go down and so far we are acting as normal as can be, ate food (half measure for good measure) and knocked out two shite's last night, one decent number this morning... Maybe later I may have a shit-on-a-stick type jobbie or he just ain't right, either will have me over the vets as fast as but until then... 'tick follows tock, follows tick....'

a dogs stomach can digest bone, if its not done any damage (being rounded each end i doubt it) then everything should be fine. i had a bitch once grab and eat an 8 inch kebab off the barby stick included. i was worried sick, but she threw it up early the next morning. if the dogs is showing no signs and is eating drinking, pissing and passing poo sticks i wouldn't be to worried

in my experience, if a dog hasnt digested something hard and solid with the acid in its stomach, it will spew it up as it cant pass down into the intestines through the narrow opening, so i like to think that the lolly stick wasnt swallowed at all else he would have spewed it (if you get my drift). how many times have you seen a dog reach up a big fragment of bone for example?

soft or flexible stuff is more of a problem in my opinion as it can work its way out of the stomach and into the intestine. stufff like grass is ok as it just moves along the bowel, but the narrow pipes can be easily blocked by say a sock or similar that the dog swallows.

i hope your dog is ok, keep us posted!
