Ive Never Been So Skint!

This'll be a big couple of years for me, built our (me and brother) business up for 15 years and then last January we merged with the man I first learnt from, giving us a much bigger concern, more headache and problems but hopefully the rewards to match.

To come off the tools and run it was a big decision for me, but it would seem it was the right one.. We've picked up a lot of work enough for the rest of this year and 2 contracts that will be going for 3-4 years...

I'm not counting my chickens though, 3 years ago we nearly lost the lot ( literally) when the shit dropped down hill from tescos and caught us at the bottom for over 40k, I learnt a few hard lessons there....

We'd worked our bollocks off all over the country and we still ended up close to being homeless...

We'll see though, as my Dad always says " keep your head down and your ass up"........ Shit that sounds so wrong lol

I stayed smallish 4 full time and a few subbies -- any spare cash I put into property and a bit of land and sold it when it was right --took a few years paid contract managers job then called it a day ..got some holiday lets that bring in a decent wage and then my bit of buying and selling to keep me active ...choose the time you want to get out and plan for that -- hope it all works out for you  look at a good private pension aswell

Bit of spare cash to buy property and land :hmm: We get the idea, you're minted

Once you have some money it's easy to make a lot of money, it's getting to the some from none that's tricky. I really do need to get a bit more motivated but it's tricky to decide if it's better to have more leisure time with limited money or more money but less time to spend it, I am currently trying to find the best of both.

That's a no brainer.

You cant take it with you and your only here once so you might as well enjoy yourself.

Some of the most miserable c**ts I've had the misfortune of knowing/working for have been loaded.

Fook it

I'm afraid mate if you do want to earn a bit you e got to put the graft in, it sounds obvious but I know loads of lads that constantly moan there skint but are always trying to knock off early to get to the pub ( of miss work completely) ...

There's a couple of blokes I do work for who are seriously minted, but their work ethic is unbelievable... Now it's not for everyone but if you do want to earn you've got to at least have the drive to go for it..

Spot on! :good: I know of a builder who worked himself into a wheelchair by the time he hit his late 40's. Very minted, but how the hell is he going to enjoy the proceeds of years and years of hard graft now? It's all about finding a balance IMO..

That's right enough but one of the most important things about achieving in your career is finding one that you WANT to work hard at. A man will work as hard as he has to in a job he has limited passion for, he'll work as hard as he can in a job or for a cause he has true passion for. Even completely gash jobs will get 110% effort if it's part of a greater goal, it's just having the clarity of vision to see the goal and the plan to achieve it. When you can't see the goal or how to get there, it's a real struggle to find that 10% above and beyond. That, is the hardest part of achieving your potential.

I knew a similar bloke, he was a builder and worked his ass off the whole time, buying clapped out houses, doing them up then renting them out....ended up with 27 houses but was miserable and tight as feck, never went on holiday, had an oldish car and wore scruffy clothes all the time. Had a heart attack in his 50s and the whole lot ended up with his only surviving relative, his cousin who he absolutely hated when he was alive.

This has been the hardest year financially. Living alone now has made sure of that. But I've managed. Got this fishing thing... When really I can't afford it cause I have Ayia Napa the following week... Another thing I shouldn't have booked but f**k it your only young once.

I've always been good with money, always been the one with plenty cash, fast cars, good clothes and never miss a trip away. All changed now though......Even have to buy food stuff in the cheapo section...... Pisses me off!!!!

Caviar's off the menu this year then..?

Get yer self a bird moved in... Make he pay for half of everything and its someone to do a bit of ironing and hoose work :victory:

Thanks gents, good to know im not alone in feeling the pinch. Sorry to spoil the illusion, no plasma tv, no sky package, 1 car cos I cant afford the petrol for the work truck til the end of the week, don't smoke, and no spare cash for a beer. Still, good for the waistline! I know we are lucky to live where we are, but It does feel like a ruddy struggle paying all the bills. Cost of living is creeping up, and im earning less than I was in 2006. Feels good to get that off my chest. Camping with the missus and kids here we come

Again mate I kind if agree, but very few people get to do there dream job, and your lucky if you can honestly say it's the career path you really wanted to take..

It's hard to be too general when talking about work, careers etc as everyone is different... But to achieve you've got to have that work ethic no matter what you do, it doesn't just come.... Just cause you work hard and have made a few bob don't mean your going to be a miserable fcker and die early lol, the same as if your struggling for work and getting going don't mean your a work shy layabout...

As long as your happy who gives a fck if your in a mansion of a box I sure as hell don't, but don't be the one constantly moaning about being skint if you aren't prepared to get out and get stuck in...

Its is tough out there for sure but what option is there except dig in and get on with it. Yes I miss not having a few spare quid in my pocket and being able to splash out on something I fancy on a whim but the wife and I are in good health along with my 3 kids who seem to be thriving and don't know any different to how it was 4-5 years ago. We have a roof over our heads, the bills are paid and we are all well fed.

The most important thing for me is making sure the kids quality of life is still enjoyable as any childhood should be and although it was a really hard decision they are going to have a holiday with their Grandparents and without us this year as its them who are also footing the bill, of course I would love to go with them but the funds just aren't there but they will have a grand time regardless, you just have to put your pride aside. I am sure there will be more pain before and if it gets any better, I am even thinking of laying off my Pastry Chef!

Rich, I am more than happy to shout you a beer, just the one mind. lol.

I guess what i meant was, and speaking from experience, you need to figure out what you want in life, a goal to achieve, then a realistic path on how to get there. When you don't know what you want or stop believing you can get there, 90% of your motivation erodes away. Knocking off early, doing half a job, imo these people aren't necessarily lazy just lack direction.

I have spoken to a lot of business owners and almost to a man they are pissed off, they are turning over money but the government is there waiting as soon as they get it !!......they all feel like they are just working for the man.

The banks are taking the piss and stock piling OUR cash to consolidate their position......can't really blame them as the powers that be are handing it to them but then coming up with ever new and harder regulations to appease the masses so the banks are just sitting on the money waiting to see what they will be forced to do next.

Politicians ain't got the sense to realise that with all these new regulations designed to get back at the banks, the only ones still suffering is the public.

Definitely having to work harder for every pound this year and its even hard to buy stuff which is surprising in hard times.

If your on the cards then your trapped as you are paying through the nose, for the self employed lads I would imagine they are having to stay on their toes and make hay while the sun shines.

Still, I always say if you can't feel the same with £2 or £200 k in the bank and its gonna make you not sleep then you better not work for yourself.

The world will turn boys ;)
