I hope you're off abroad though as the use of lead for shooting Geese in the UK is illegal and low compliance now means a total ban of all lead shot for all purposes is now being considered:

Would be a nightmare if lead got banned for all uses because the alternatives are so expensive eg Hevi are around £20 per box of 25!

If you want to save some money and potentially kill cleaner, don't go that heavy for fox.

 

Some Eley Alphamax+ in 3's, 1's or BB will do the job quite nicely. In fact the 1's and BB's are exclusively made for Charlie:

I've never shot Eley but I used to use Gamebore High Bird 42gr no: 1 chambered in 2 3/4" non magnum. Not made anymore in that load though.

 

The Alphamax appears to be the nearest equivolent.

 

Just be aware that with AAA there won't be many shot in a cartridge. A 3" cartridge only has 5mm more depth than a 2 3/4 so not much more room for large shot such as AAA so shot count will be low. At very close range such a cartridge is overkill. At longer ranges it may be ineffective due to lack of shot in the pattern and thus hits and thus shock effect.

 

- A single hit even from an AAA is unlikely to kill something as large as a fox outright

 

That's why 3's, 1's or BB's are usually preferred. I would suggest 1's or BB's might be the middle way and keep the choking tighter than for general game shooting.

 

I've had good result with both 3's and 1's but would err towards the 1's. I wouldn't rule out BB's, just have never tried them!

Good advice Alsone .

I used Express 42g 1's for yrs then tried Eley Alphamax 42 g 1's , both as good as each other. two yrs ago I couldn't get 1's so got a box of Alphamax BB's instead and after seeing the result's , I prefer them. Better penetration and therefore better stopping power.

Depends how many you're buying and how many you're shooting but for bulk try:

When I looked Eley are around £9 per box. Considering most people don't shoot hundreds of foxes, a box of 25 should last between a few sessions to even a dozen or more depending on how many foxes you encounter at shootable range.

 

Also, remember the AAA's aren't really suitable for fox unless used at very close range as you won't get enough hits at range to kill the animal, you'll probably just wound it and have a runner. This isn't a bird you're shooting at but a sizeable animal and they're far more resiliant to a single shot or two. With a shotgun you need a number of hits to generate the shock to kill and even though AAA's transfer more energy being larger, one or two won't usually cut it especially to the body.

 

If Eley are still pricey locally and you can't buy bulk, then any heavy load of BB's, 1's or 3's will do provided your gun is chambered and proofed for the cartridge you're using. Like I said, I've dropped many a fox cleanly with 3's. Don't go below 3's in size though.

I was thinking of getting express 1's at 46g that would have more lead, and maby a few box of BB on this side. I had a price on eley alphamax 14.99 a box and the express was 12.99..
