I went to a friends house for a bbq last night and a ferret walked into the garden! well the kids managed to talk me into keeping it and they have now called it dave! the thing is it is in a poor state and quite under weight. what I was wondering is is there anything I can feed him to pack the weight on quickly? at the moment he is having a bit of cat food and bread and milk as I wasn't really prepared for daves arrival. as I speak I am cobbling a hutch together out of an old rifle box(thanks kids).I would be grateful for any advice cheers rob! Whole rabbit is good, gutted and quartered, but chicken wings and such from the supermarket will do. Then when its a bit fatter you could switch to ferret kibble to try and cut back on the meat and the flies! 1 Quote Link to post
brucemyster 75 Posted July 6, 2013 Report Share Posted July 6, 2013 meat is good, fresh rabbit and pigeon if you can get it, but feed late in the evening and remove in the morning to minimise flies, a good ferret complete food is great during the day, I use James Well Beloved, expensive but good stuff, cat foods aren't really designed for ferrets, carcasses and hard ferret foods also help tooth health Check the ferret for ticks, as it's been out and about it could have picked them up and this can diminish their base health Quote Link to post

gnipper 6,412 Posted July 6, 2013 Report Share Posted July 6, 2013 People will probably disagree with this but years ago I took on a hob at deaths door and the advice I was given off the forums was tripe and it worked a treat. Rabbits don't really have any fat in them to bulk it back up, chicken and pigeon will have it putting weight on in no time though. Quote Link to post

Alcatraz 16 Posted July 8, 2013 Report Share Posted July 8, 2013 Yeah rabbit is no good unless its fresh once its bin frozen there is no goodness in it i feed mine james well beloved (dry food ) around 8quid a bag and skinned day old chicks (2 each) 200 for 7 quid(most pet shops can get them) that will last ya months and fresh rabbit in season...... These 4 ferrets of mine must be near deaths door then, as their still eating portions of rabbit caught in January. Feed it chicken wings/drumsticks and it will fatten up straight away, leave some dry in there at all times and it will be fine. Will look rough depending on how long it's been out living wild. Check it over for ticks as there normally covered in them, I know mine was when he got out. 1 Quote Link to post

Must admit i thought he was having a laugh last night as well so i left it ,but freezing a rabbit takes the goodness out of it , so ive wasted my time filling the freezers over the winter with rabbits and i should be buying dry crap for animals that have big teeth as there carnivores and eat meat , and to top it all i should be feeding D.O.C. which is just a egg covered in fluff , Well i live and learn 2 Quote Link to post
