Whippets in lurchers

part of the team is a laguna/nimrodel whippet off coursing lines as have been mentioned.what he brings to the team is plenty of stamina a will to just hunt non stop when we are out he is constantly looking for anything that moves and i mean anything he is keen enough to work the cover on his own if need be and works on ahead sometimes(this is obviously not always to the good) quick off the mark and determined aswell as hard as nails he is a true character. minus points with him are he dont like the water to much swimming ditches and the like he leaves to others ie my lurcher he has a good coat on him and he doesnt seem to suffer to much when the weather is bad,yes he has had a few tears here and there but he heals well enough. all in all i would say if you do a bit of rabbiting and mooching there is a place for the whippet in my humble opinion they aint called potfillers for nothing.

A good working whippet ads, heart, a obbsession to kill and bottomless courage, drive, determination.

Spot on there Frank!

My dog Pedro has a fair bit of whippet in him, he has been an outstanding dog for me, I use him mainly with the terriers and IMO he is hard to beat at this, hes not that bad on the lamp either, has had a few day ferreting in his time and even could run a hare or 2 in his younger days a couple of times he would run the hare for what seemed ages, often dissapearing from view for a few minutes, make the catch and bring the f****r back!!!

He has all the attributes you list Frank but also has the bonus of not being a cold arse, having a decent coat and doesn't have paper-like skin due to everything else he has in his make up.

I wouldn't get a pure whippet as it wouldn't suit what I do, but would definatley get a lurcher with some whippet in it, as long as it were the right sort of whippet!! ;)

I hope when/if I breed from him next year that his son will be just as good :(

The way i see it with the whippets is, if they are from the right stuff..........well yes they have some attributes to offer whether in a lurchers make-up or run as pure whippet, but a lot could be said for most breeds as we all know there is some shite being bred from in all breeds whether it be bull, saluki, collie ect  im no expert in whippets but ive seen a few decent ones run and ive seen some wee shivering wenches i wouldnt give kennel room :D

I think most lurchers would and do in alot of cases benafit from whippet blood in them. Add a dash of terrier for coat and feet and a bit of greyhound for height and you are away. If you want some more up top then what else would you add? collie? SALUKI? Poodle? :tongue2:
