i never run my dogs from a slip always off. imo it saves alot of time and fecking about putting a dog back on the lead, also a good lamp dog should be able to work the beam. from anywhere in the fiel

Why don't folk train their muts to walk properly on lead ??   I would not have a dog pulling me along

I just chuck the keys to the van at mine and tell her "nee poaching and don't be back to late"...   Real Dog

I would not have a dog pulling me along

Not all of them can be. Out of my 3 the collie/grey is the worst for pulling but will walk perfectly to heel off the lead. The only dog I've ever had wich I don't lamp without a slip lead is my saluki/grey. And he's not really a lamper so it doesn't matter too much. Atb

The dogs taking the piss really..

Cause is they can do it off the lead being on would be no different..

Its choosing not to and you are indulging their poor behaviour..

It might be difficult to persuade a strong willed dog but its not impossible and is achievable ..

Each to their own I would not accept it.

Doubt it mate seeing as the old dog is 10 year old and still does it. A good friend of mine is a well known professional dog trainer. Means fook all to me but he trains pp dogs aswell as numerous "problem" dogs and makes alot of money out of the results he get.Speaking too him about it years back he said he could sort the problem for me. Unfortunately it was bang in the middle of ferreting time so I declined but if it inconveniance me too much i couldve sorted it.why would I waste time when he walks perfectly off the lead is bombproof with cats and other people calling him and will stand at a road wait and not move till told. Like you say each to there own.

i see a lot of folk having problems controlling there dogs on and off the slip, sometimes it seems its easier just to live with it, i personally wouldnt start lamping with a dog that wasnt properly trained, if it never achieved the basics i had in mind then its never even going to get a shot at graft, its my way or the high way :D

Out of interest all of those who like to lamp off the slip do your dogs wait until they are told to run or do they go for the first thing that's lit up ? Atb

If I scan the field and there are a couple of squatters then I can keep her to heel and tell her to wait. Then send her to whichever I want.

If it starts running in the beam then its game on and no stopping her.

If Im scanning she walks by my side, if I light something up and it is seen by her, I let her make her own call, as that will be GO. If she hasn't seen the quarry, if its squatting or over a brow I hiss quietly, she will trot the beam right out if needed.

same as me-my bitch will trust me- that there is something at the end of the beam and trot out till she connects with it ;)

no need for a lead if the dogs trained right mine walks by my side and waits for the hiss and goes up the beam cant be doing with a dog pulling and choking its self just down to a lazy owners not putting the time in to the dog
