gnipper 6,426
Just do what every other person does and buy a fecking captive bred one. Wether its legal or not its not on trapping them. Traps have no place on this or any other birdkeeping forum imo.
killbilly 17
Those birds you mention are all now fully protected in the Republic. So trapping them is indeed illegal. Edited July 4, 2013 by killbilly
coneykenny 98
i suppose thats the easiest way around it ,the old internet search.as i said before ,only looking to see how things are done these days im well aware that methods of the past should firmly remain there. Outlaw Pete 2,224
Kenny; Just to add, mate; If you go to look at a bird, as with anything else someone's bred, be sure to see the parents. Also, when the person holds the bird and shows you the ring on its leg; Look At that ring! In fact, get hold of it and turn it round. Don't be shy. Make damn sure there's no sign that it's ever been cut open. Check also that it fits close to the leg. Walk away from anyone offering a bird with a loose looking ring. Screw your loaf even when looking at adverts. Goldfinches being offered from a Halting Site would not bode too well, would it? What your Grandfather used to do was perfectly legal, back in his day. Now it's not and we move with the times. Besides, a nice, captive bred bird will actually knock the spots off a wild one. Back in the day, I saw a load of wild caught birds being offered in certain pet shops. Then, one day ~ I'll never forget it ~ I walked into one shop and there was this Goldfinch. Sat there, calm as you like. And the colours were Screaming at me!!! Deep, Deep Red and Yellow. I did such a double take I almost broke my neck! Why bother with some pale, washed out, stressed out thing. Fluttering up off the perch for the rest of its miserable little life. For the same price, with a little patience, you'll find an absolute cracker

fireman 10,867
Dak is bird lime, which is a sticky glue type stuff that clogs up the wings so you can hand catch them,. Edited July 5, 2013 by fireman

Shamo 319
'Coneykenny', there are some Breeders out there who finance their Hobby by selling offspring. There are those who also 'Trap' and finance their lives by charging 'Breeder prices' for Birds they caught. For your purposes go to a Breeder and get Birds bred from Show/captive bred stock. They will probably be bigger and may have better colouring than 'wild caught' Birds, but the main thing is they will have the correct Rings on and you have a person to verify their ancestry, should you need to. I am not anti-trapping, just anti rip off merchants and Trappers with cash in mind, with little thought for the Birds' welfare.
