Giro 2,648
Don't start it to young... Don't give it to much & go by yourself... Give it easy rabbits, sitters. Walk the dog right up to them and don't slip until its tugging on the lead and definitely seen the rabbit. I would not risk a run now unless the dogs mature enough and the grounds soft enough.. Plenty of time yet best not to rush things 6 Quote Link to post
graham4877 1,181
best place to take them is on the golf course just to spot them, don't slip...you'l just dishearten dog... then take it on some land with longer grass once dog has spotted them slip the dog.. theirs no such thing as an easy rabbit, but try to find one right out in the open... make sure you are where the rabbit wants to make its way home...ie blocking it path, so a bit day time waking the land to find out where the sets are....FIELD CRAFT 1 Quote Link to post

Rabbithunter 456
One handy thing i learned was when you have the pip retrieving. Take him out when its dark. Get a tennis ball wrap in with tinfoil then sellotape. Roll the ball away and illuminate with the lamp. Amd have to dog retrieve it. Just start off small distance and gradually get further away... it doesnt harm now and then to switch the lamp off and recall the dog so it knows lamp off means get back. Keep building the distance up ... eventually throwing the ball in darkness so the dog has no idea where you thrown in..... then light it up and send the dog. It may not work for every dog.. bit it sure helped my young fella Quote Link to post
iceman001979 1,316
Sheep fields with sheep wire or rock walls. Grass always short rabbit sits out more and find it harder to get though the wire and walls. But do like getting them out young to watch the older dogs lamping and working Quote Link to post

Just before the fields got to high...had about four outings ...goes down the beam well ......ready for the harvest now.. The thing I find when starting a pup lamping ...you slip pup.. the rabbit jumps up .the pup goes one way the rabbit goes the other way and your the one chasing the rabbit with the lamp lol some pups it just click within a few nights some take long .and some are write wankers... If I was you and the pup has not Seen nothing I'd weight for a good night in the harvest and work from there...it won't take long for you and the pup to no the crack...atb with the lamping and pup.. birddog 1,354
i use a rabbit skin dummy in the park progressing to dead rabbits as the pup progresses, doing it at this time of year reinforces recall when the lamp is turned off, the pup learns when the beam is on a spot theres always something there giving it confidence in your gamefinding, retrieve can be perfected etc.....when it comes to september pick a black windy night and wait for a sitter there should be lots of green bunnies about by then and you can work on building the pups confidence by november it'll mow them down atb Quote Link to post
shaluk 48
Personally I wait until I think pup is mature enough and also has a good level of fitness this can help prevent opening up when coursing. Also I agree that you should have the right conditions and ground to run there first rabbits. Don't overun the dog you are better off just selecting the rabbits for the dog .as the saying goes slowly slowly catch a monkey or inyour case a rabbit lol. Atb with the pup. Quote Link to post
