man o kent 269
Being the only member of my family with an interest in fieldsports, its a steep and lengthy learning curve starting from scratch. Got me to wondering, how did you seasoned terriermen get started? Were you born into it, or came to love it later in life? Quote Link to post
marshman 7,758
I was brought up in a family that used to course and work terriers . Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
i'm in no way a seasoned terrier man or a terrier man for that matter but love all field sports. just like you i'm the only one in my family with any interest of field sport . It all started from a young age with me with a thirst knowledge of the natural world from bird watching to finding frogs and newts in the local ponds as i grew older i wanted to learn more more. then one day i read a ferreting book by graham wellstead and the rest is history. I firmly believe that the drive to hunt is something that we are all born with and is deep in our souls. some of us hunts rabbits and the next person may hunt the sale in work is you get my drift. i'm proud to be the only member of my family practicing field sports and will en devour to educate and inspire the next generation. 3 Quote Link to post

the_stig 6,614
had a Russell of a local terrierman alan dodds for a pet when I was 12 --- summer holidays she caught her first rat on the sewage works by the end of the summer she`d had 50 --I went back brought another off him a 16 month old half brother that winter I kept ratting the sewage works the dykes and ditches within 3/4 mile of where I lived . I was soon in demand ratting the local farms I used to cycle to most places on an old butchers bike with 4 russells in the basket on the front ..I helped alan dodds dig a few foxes and done a few on my own by the time I was 14 ..my mate cookie who I`ve known since I was 5 got interested and got a couple of terriers .. lost interest a bit till I was 21 brought a terrier to have one about the place bumped into another terrierman who at the time I didn't know was one of the big names got an invite to his kennels and started up again ...got 3 old terriers about the place now apart from a couple of year never been without a terrier in 43 year... ran the odd lurcher aswell but that's another story .. Rabbit Hunter 6,613
My granddad used to dig badgers(when it was legal) and help the terrierman at the local hunt (South Durham) aswell as having a couple of lurchers for hare coursing, however by the time I was old enough to take notice he just had ferrets and did the odd bit of rabbiting so I suppose it's in the blood as much as if you're brought up amongst it... 3 Quote Link to post
