had a little walk today with ern, me old mate who ive known for some time has add a stroke and I get him 1 or to bits, for his tea, I think cooking them and preparing the, passers the time of day for

I TOOK THIS TODAY, GIVE IT 4 / 5 MORE WEEKS YOU WILL HAVE THE HOBBY TIMEING THE YOUNG SAND MARTIN AND DRAGON FLY,,HIT S THE LATEST BIRD OF PREY TO GO DOWN,, ITS GREAT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH LIKE

I was a avid egg collector in my youth through the 70s. Had some nice sightings of birds in the following years a old pic of a capercallie when on a mooch in scotland many years ago.

An old mate of mine used to fly a big old mexican import harris hawk many years ago.. I would have put that against most dogs ive seen and it would have given a good account of itself. . .It was hot on the bunnies and caught bolters as quick as any dog ive seen..It would just sit on the spade over the burrow and practically drop on the bunnies on there way out..Seen it pull a few out of the holes also when they try diving back down. . . he would catch something everytime he was out with that bird and it loved the long ears. . . he lamped at night with it also. . .it was a flying Lurcher. !

Ive seen a few since and they were useless... too small for the job and not trained the same way.. Some people have the gift with dogs and birds just naturally and others will just strive to try.

The reason my old mate was good with the hawks I put down to his natural field craft skills that he always had from his old days with the ferrets and lurchers..he understood how to get the bird working like a fine tuned part of the pack..

Theres thousands of people out there with hawks etc etc but not so many who know the countryside enough to get the best out them birds.

Too right...

We often bolt rabbits for Hawking enthusiasts,..Corporate Days, paying guests, etc,..and it is noticeable, that the guys who have done a bit of hunting,.and who know the score,..always seem to have their birds in good yarak and are mentally primed and ready,.. to intercept the bolt...

All the best, Phil.

Some Hawks, Harris, Red Tails and of course,.. Gos,.are streets ahead of their fellow avian predators,..same as certain dogs,.and their owners,...seem to make much better,..keener,..more successful hunters...

I bet you've seen some good flights Phil. . . and your spot with what you say. Them goshawks are very impressive/explosive hunters..but I will say one thing about them Harris Hawks if you get a few good lads with good birds who know what they are doing..they are a very formidable team..especially when the birds work well together with the dogs and hunting partners..nothing gets away. ..it great to see them working like a pack following on with the dogs etc etc.

But when all is said and done you can't do big big bags with hawks like you can with the dogs..its impossible with the food based training etc etc..they soon get full up and refuse to work etc etc.. unless you got a lot of hawks.. :D
