Dew Claws

They are a redundant digit. Fact. They serve no purpose. Do a quick web search.

 

When dogs evolved the dew claw grew high up from its predecessors. I can't remember the exact terminology but honestly have a look on the net.

 

As Paul said. Why leave on a possible issue.

 

Even if only 10% gave problems. Why take that chance?

i believe most are left on due to the fact the people that breed them don't know how to remove them

 

think its just they cant be bothered its not a hard thing to do

And of course they won't keep there dew claws down by just by climbing river banks its a combination of all work.

Why start a thread though if you arent open to reason? Youve obviously got it in your head that dew claws are best left on and arent willing to change that view. So whats the point of the thread?

 

To see what others do? If the whole forum said fetch them off you would still say they are best on I think...

Gaz you get me all wrong fella if you'd read the original post you'd of seen why I asked. I'm certainly not a close minded person I believe every opinion is important regardless of whether it fits in with your own or mine that's the beauty of a forum.

I've always left them on because they're there for a reason and help the dog make those tight turns, i have never had to trim them which i think proves just how much the dogs use them. I used to corse a lot and rarely had any injuries to them, no more than any other toe or claw But most litters I see for sale now have had them removed? What's the thinking behind this?

Off,,, there's no way on earth a dew claw comes in contact with the ground on a turn,, the dog would have to be horizontal ,,,there one of those things left over from evolution ,,, like our coxsics or appendix ,,,,

 

Some breeds of dogs have rear dew claws,, and even double rear dew claws,, and some of these breeds those dew claws are just kind of hanging,, they have no control over them...

If the dew claw is in contact with the ground while running, then damaging the dew claw itself is probably the least of the dogs foot problems. If they aren't off as pups, and they are a proper joint with claw ( some seem larger than others ) then I have them taken off if the dog needs any other sort of surgery. I won't remove them from an adult just on their own, but I do tape them up when I know the dog is going to be running. Other than that, I keep them short and rounded off.

Off, just a bloody nuisance, if thery come into contact with the ground during a high speed turn the claw just gets ripped off and on heather etc they also get ripped off, both equal an injured dog.

Get them off as a new born pup, If you can';t do it yourself then I think the vets only charge about a tenner per pup.

 

Wish I had taken Tess's off when she was born, she smashed hers twice in one year, ripped the nail off first time, then smashed it the second time, the split went right back into the 'toe' She was lame until they took them off, so if they go wrong they can put a dog out of action for weeks...

Phoned the vets for a quote and was told it'll cost £260

Phoned about and got quotes ranging from £150 to over £300 so definately worth shopping around.

I took these off at two days old now four days old and healing nice. Use cut and heal and you'll have no problem but make sure you go right back past the nail this is to lads that havent done it before ,other wise they will grow back f****d. If your a bit screamish of doing it take them to a vets charge is 6 pound a pup but you can do it your self lads easy.
