Dubba 72
On or of? I've always left them on because they're there for a reason and help the dog make those tight turns, i have never had to trim them which i think proves just how much the dogs use them. I used to corse a lot and rarely had any injuries to them, no more than any other toe or claw But most litters I see for sale now have had them removed? What's the thinking behind this? Gaz_1989 9,539
The dewclaws do not make contact with the ground in most cases. They don't assist with turning and are considered a weak digit that if left on will cause problems. My bitch has got hers and we have no end of trouble with her catching them. When I have a litter they will be coming straight off. 3 Quote Link to post

hargreavesheber 93
My bitch had em on and I had no end of hassle with her either splitting the nail next to the nail bed or twisting them clean off. Enough was enough the vet removed them last Thursday. All be it my bank balance is £260 lighter but the bitch will be better off without them in the long run. If I had a litter they would be coming off for sure.. Atb Quote Link to post
paulus 26
off, why leave a possible future problem on. when there is no gain at all in doing so Quote Link to post
shaluk 48
Personally I would remove them to save a trip to the vets when they tear. Quote Link to post
nans pat 2,575
if there no good why are they born with them...there must be some rason for them. 1 Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
They are a redundant digit. Fact. They serve no purpose. Do a quick web search. When dogs evolved the dew claw grew high up from its predecessors. I can't remember the exact terminology but honestly have a look on the net. As Paul said. Why leave on a possible issue. Even if only 10% gave problems. Why take that chance? Quote Link to post
cookiemonsterandmerlin 145
Off on running dogs for me pure headache to have them on,but on my gundogs Ive always wanted them on as I shoot alot on rivers and have found dews to be invalueable to help the dogs claw its way up riverbanks Cookie Quote Link to post
