Finally getting round to tidying it up a bit. I want to put some flags in front of the dog run... it is all soil down there..

My question is.. will i need to dig out the soil and put a bit of sub base down... or can i get away with tipping a load of sand down there... levelling it off and laying the flags right on top?

Cheers

If you use stone chippings or wood chippings I would still dig out 100 mm ,put a treated timber edge !00mm in (Cheaper & quicker than concrete) , lay the terram, 75mm of type 1 ,compact , this w

Ya lazy fooker. That thing couldn't lift the top off a pie! You would be quicker with a spade.

6inchs out all over 4 inchs of MOT1 scalpings wacking with a plate then membrane covering of sharp sand wacked again and then flags with a 5 in 1 mortar base not 5 spots but a complete covering .

first of weigh the sink in......... :whistling: then see if you can hire a digger and driver.......average price is 150 a day and a good one will piss that in a day!!! ask him about getting rid of the soil, he will no someone for that...........then find a firm that crushes concrete round your way as stone is around a tenner a ton off them, compared to £50 a ton bag for mot1 from a builders merchants..... ;) get the stone for inches below the level of the slabs, whack it and then look around for slabs, you will find someone wanting rid if you look hard enough lol and then get some sand, cement, mix it in a barrow and lay your first slab, set a line off that and repeat till your finished........easy........... :D

If i am going to attempt to do the slabs... how much sub base do you reckon... i reckon the area will be 20foot x 4foot... depending on size of slabs i can acquire..

3inch all over will be plenty when whacked..........

carry on then  but trust me for the price and time/effort it saves, a digger/driver will look like peanuts when your digging hard soil like that in the heat......... plus more will come out than you think!!! you will need a ton an half on there.........

The only reason I go against crushed concrete on such a same area/job is if it not very well crushed it does not wack as well as MOT1

true mate, but just dont take it unless its the dusty stuff, normally found at the bottom of the pile......... :D
