secretagentmole 1,701
Well decided to have an afternoon out on the permissions. So first thing to do as always, phone up the police and tell them I will be yomping round the area in full camo waving a rifle. People do mistakenly think there are public rights of way over the fields, seeing a man with a gun as you are taking Fluffles for a walkie can disturb the Rich Tea sediment in the stomach. So a quick call to 101 will eliminate that problem. The next is to make sure the gun (taking Thea the Rapid 7 out) is topped up, make sure you have the right ammo and all magazines for the rifle ready. Then I have to make sure the mobile phone is charged, that I have a couple of bags of sweets on me, some sugared Coca Cola as well as some diet drinks (I have been an insulin dependent diabetic since I was 10).This is all put in the bag and I make sure that the camo is ready for use (ie not full of holes and covered in dog hair). Dust off the Realtree wellies and get prepared.Today I have a task, I have to zero the new Night Eye 6-24x50 IR scope, so I will be taking my target box, a load of targets and some tape! I use 5 cross target so I get plenty of shots per sheet of A4 (tightwad). I will set zero at 25 metres then play with the magnification to get the 5 metre steps set up properly! After setting up Thea I will then be ambush shooting from the prone position, off a bipod.Setting up presented a problem or three, literally! I am laid down zeroing to 25 metres when I felt pressure on my back, heard breathing in my ear and felt a tongue in my ear! The permission holder's three dogs had come out to investigate. One was as bad as my Labrador, completely soft, needed a hug, demanded a hug. So set up abandoned for half an hours playtime then take them back home.Set up and get good grouping, move target back to 35 metres and check magnification. X16 enabled the steps on the Sr reticle to work in 5 metre steps, so scope left on X16,.Get into position and no rabbits, for some unknown reason they do not want to come out and play. Perhaps the 3 dogs upset them a little, can't be too upset though, patience will pay dividends! Then I see the one of the other permission holder;s cats stalking, patience, patience and hope the dogs chase it off. In the end the tabby decides to go inside and stalk a nice dish of flaked horse or something!Just gone 6pm and there is a movement in the grass. A nice sized rabbit appears and hops to 35 metres away. Using the SR reticle I compensate with holdover and fire. Straight between the eyes! Rabbit dead!So I had a nice afternoon mutt watching (at very close quarters) and a rabbit disposed of! She is working well now! 3 Quote Link to post
