First Time Owner Of A Ess ..advice Please

Im looking for just some very basic advice regarding my new hunting partner,

She wont be worked to the gun or on beats,but shes to be worked under my hawk on bunnies.

 

She is 11 mths old and has done hardly nothing at all,ive had her just a few days and shes settled in straight away,

So far ive got her to retrieving the dummy bunny on land and in water,plus ive got her to sit and stay "she will stay at some distance" i take her out twice a day at the minute i dont force the training upon her but gradully make it fun for her.

 

Want im getting stuck on is when shes just out in front"20 30 yds" i cant get her to stop ! she will just come straight back to me instead of stopping dead,how do i get her to stop dead ! thanks in advance guys.

are you using the sit command to stop her?

focus on the sit command at a short distance then slowly start to try increasing that distance that you try dropping her

They last owner used the " up " command to stop her so i have continuied with that command,when i use it she comes in and sits down next to me !

you need to start from scratch with that , get her sitting while she is close , and trying to lenghthen the distance you can drop her , if she starts to come in instead of sitting walk her back to the spot and sit her , it could take some time but she should get there eventually .. sounds like she as been allowed to get away with it during training ..

She is a good lisner,and when i call her name she looks and returns straight to me,im not wanting a field trial dog i just want her to stop because if she chases bunnies when im out hawking its going to be a right pain in the butt,so i was thinking before i intruduce her to game i need her to stop dead when i command her to..

 

Thats all i ask of her when the time comes is to work patches of cover,dont worry stock,dont kill my hawk and dont run after bunnies ..thanks guys

She needs to understand that the whistle means stop, so I would get her back on the lead and take her for a walk and every time you stop blow the whistle and put a hand command in her face, make shaw she stops and sits, when she's done that give lots of love or a treat know and again. After a while she will get to know she has to stop and sit when you blow the whistle & always backup with hand command at same time.

 

I do this at feeding time too blow the whistle and give hand command, and when she sits give her the bowl of food, she should after time understand learn that when she does this she either gets love or food.

 

The shooting times has had some good basic gundog training advice in over the last few weeks.

Thanks ever so much for the advice guys,ive also had to get her around stock,i.e. sheep and horses so the last two days ive been getting on with that,im not really wanting to use the whistle has i use that for the hawk so it may get connfusing for the dog ?..i started to use the stop command today while i was out with her and shes already doing it so im chuffed,few more outings amoungest the sheep and horses and then some weeks on the commands and il introduce her to quarry ..pictures from today and yestarday

One question jumps straight out at me ! Why are you teaching a dog for hawks to retrieve ? Surely you are asking for either a dead hawk or a Badly footed Dog ?

 

You need a dog that works to the whistle stop, left, right and back. STOP the dummy work she is a flushing machine and once flushed she should know her job is done.

a springer should stop when game is flushed and should only retrieve when told to ...running in should not be tolerated imo

A Springer has been bred as a GUN dog not for falconry ( yes I know they can be trained to hawks, But if you have spent much time with springer's you should know what bu**ers they can be )

In hawking/falconry a retrieve should NEVER be asked for so what I was asking is why include it in the dogs training ?

how can your dog get footed or your hawk get killed if the dog hasnt run in??

 

ive spent enough time with springers that will work with hawk or gun and also with lurchers to understand them

 

what as my pitted barrels got to do with this thread ???

Well the question about using a Gun with badly pitted barrels shows what experience you have with Guns and how you look after them

dogs aint impeccably trained, but they sound better trained than yours
