Nylon Or Aluminum Flyscreens, Which Do You Prefer?

Just fitted fly screening on my second hutch using nylon fly netting, very easy to cut and fix, I used push pins as didn't want to disturb the jill too much as she's just had kits (I know I should have done it earlier but plans of mice and men and all that twaddle) On my other hutch I've used aluminium fly screen (over twice the price!!) not quite as easy to fix but still cuts with a decent pair of scissors, again fixed with pins for the same reason. I prefer the look of the nylon as it's not as heavy and gives better visibility but obviously not as robust as the ali version. When funds prevail I'll make removable fly screens but as caught a little on the hop these will have to prevail for the moment.

Would you use Nylon or aluminium for the removable screens and what's your experience with either?

Ive used the nylon, its okay did the job, just used roofing tacks.

I use nylon horticultural stuff I staple it to the doors

to the outside hutch but still get the odd fly in clever buggers

Just bought a screen for the door of the court off JML

not sure how good it will be but worth a try

I have a cat litter tray screwed to the floor which they use, filled with four handfuls of cat litter.

changed every third day,

And i feed complete in the Summer, Rabbit in Winter.

With this regime, they don't get bothered with Flies.

mine use a litter tray which I change every day (mind you it has shavings in rather than cat litter) I fed egg and pigeon breast a couple of days back and when I took the bowls out the next day the bowl from the hutch with a fly screen had no fly eggs yet the one without had a cluster, I hate flies, someone on here mentioned citronella spray as a deterrent, which I thought I might give a try but can't seem to get hold of any. I normally would only feed JWB complete during this time of year but as the jills have had kits wanted to give them a boost and also want to be weaning the kits to pigeon and rabbit

I don't really get flys in the hutches , there around the shed but not in the hutches ,

I don't like anything that obscures any amount of breeze from my cages at this time of year, all to easy to fry your ferrets, would rather have the flies

I know what your saying re air flow and it was one of my concerns, however my hutches all have secondary roofs which prevent the sun directly heating the top of the hutches, they also have sunshades, sounds posh but its just a couple of light tarps fixed to the secondary roofs which I roll out on bright days, the 4 ¹/₂ " pipework from the court/play area helps with airflow balancing out the hutch temp, unintentional in it's design but it does somehow work.

Same here all my hutches have 1 inch mesh on the runs and with feeding at night removing the remains , bleaching the slabs the huts are on and a fly trap each side of the hutches theres not much of a problem with flies . And even with the airy runs there still sleeping out side

bit of scrim netting easily sorts the problem...

 

the poles on top if the hutch are supporting a poncho (waterproof sheet)...keeps the area nice and cool....the dogs even go there to lie down....

 

the suns cracking the slates here....and as you can see.. the hutch is shaded.

This hutch has Nylon fly screens, cost a couple of quid

just noticed the black squiggle, it's where I resized it in paint and not a rouge hair of a pubic nature!!

The one at the end has ali fly screens, cost about six quid, don't like them as much

This is their play area, it does stand level it's me that doesn't

one lot of kits, I have two litters at the moment but the others aren't being co-operative when it comes to pictures!!.

 

both hutches have light tarp shades.
