Hunting With Plummer Terrier In France

Recommended Posts

I am taking my Plummer over to France next weekend for a couple of weeks to hopefully do some hunting. My inlaws have a rural farmhouse in a place called Adriers, mid west. They have some land with a large lake and outbuildings, I also have access to the farms in the area too. I am hoping to do some ratting and maybe have a pop at the local Ragondin (coypu) population on the lake and surrounding lakes too. Thanks to Blaise who has also put me in touch with the master of the local terrier men as the fox and badger season is in full swing too so hoping for a trip or two out digging with the local "venerie sous terre. I would appreciate any advice or information from anyone either living in France or who has hunted over there? Regards.

Thanks Fish, Ive been over there loads of times but never hunted, seen the French working the hounds through the maize fields i assume flushing boar to the guns, but its the opportunity to legally dig that I am looking forward to again!

be careful coming back through customs, if your dog is knocked up it will be seized and take a lifetime getting it back, if at all you do, then the legal cost, as a friend of mine found out just over £2000, solicitor then there vet bill.

There are only certain parts of the north around Normandy where its legal to dig and it has to be signed off by the local mayor, the rest is just the same as here,my mate left these shores for France thinking he could do as he liked 7 yrs ago,he now does very little, you even need a licence for a ferret,he's gutted because he sold a smallholding here to buy a farm in the south,he could'nt even hunt his own land as the local boar hunting club has all the hunting rights, not even any rabbits in his area, everything is shot to death in europe,WM

Apparently locators can't be used, but I'm taking my deben mk3, nice and inconspicuous, Wirral, that's not the case at all, digging is legal across the entire country but you do need a hunting permit. The digging is a more organised activity similar to traditional hunting in this country ran by the local venerie sous terre I think it's called. You can dig as an individual if all the requirements of the permit are met, rabbits aren't that common due to the enormous buzzard population and coursing is banned I think. The coypu (ragondin) are a fair game for terriers I believe, and you do have the right to control the hunting on your own land but a sign must be posted if you don't wish to allow hunting across your land otherwise the hunt assumes permission is granted.

Tb25, the badgers (blaireau) are exactly the same and the place is teeming with them and foxes (renard). I will say all the foxes I have seen do seem to be slighter in size and darker red than ours in uk, but this might not be the case across France.

As Alli said I wouldn't risk trying to fetch a knocked up dog back. Surely better to leave the dog at home & spend as much time with the terrier team instead. Digging is legal across the whole of france but I think the weather is an issue the further south you go. All hunters have to complete a written test & I'm told it is possible to register to hunt on your own but easier to join a club. Have a great time mate & let us know how you get on. Hopefully get over there myself sometime

Jeemes even if its marked up from rats & coypu the customs will be suspicious & have reason to seize the dog....I know what you're getting at though lol
