At this age, just build a bond with the dog mate, spend as much time as possible with it. Keep it close to you, get it looking at you. Get it to know it's name. That's about it really at the early stages, other than the obvious house training etc. I personally also wouldn't do a few things - i.e wouldnt play any kind of tug of war, wouldnt throw a ball for it, or let it chase anything etc. But most important at this stage is the bond and eye contact for me  Good luck

Someone will buy it a squeaky toy......make sure you take the "squeak" out.............not wanting a hard mouthed dog...

Funny you say that though Lab my pup loves her toys, my older dog not so much but he has this squeaky cupcake thing that he carries round and gives it a little squeak every now and then...loves it. Never had any bother with hard mouth when retrieving game though :victory:

I pick up my first ESS tomorrow. Local spaniel trainer told me to get it hunting because its easier to reign in a hunting dog than get a sticky dog to hunt.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I'd say that wasn't the best advice to be honest mate. As has been said if the breeding is there it will hunt. But trying to reign in a dog that has started hunting without proper control and training and is hunting for itself is not easy. A lot of folk ruin spaniels entering them to game too easy.

I don't intend to get into an argument about it. What I wrote is the abridged version of a 2 minute conversation I had with a professional full-time working spaniel trainer about a month ago. He did only say to encourage it to hunt. There was no mention of entering it to game or letting it run riot.
