Could be a few things really, mite or her just not liking feeding the bigger chicks and now she only has one to choose from she'll either get on with it or leave it to die, what goes on in a nest at times is any ones guess really if your not there to see it type thing.Good luck with the one that's left but were there any black spots on the dead chicks bellies?.

It's called Black spot and is hard to miss as it's a big black spot on the chicks belly, not totaly sure what it is but once got a lot of chicks are lost through it,but like i say mate quite unmissable if you look over your dead chicks rather than just chuck them in the bin .It can be treated with esb or some other antibiotics like amoxocillen.

I'm fascinated by this " Black Spot ". Never heard of it before and have just emailed my boss, to see if it's known to us, amongst wild broods.

I'm gutted now that I didn't know about it in time to look at the guts on that brood of swallows that died out in Pat's car port. (Oh! Another nest there, with eggs, yesterday)

Absolutely any scrap of information of Black Spot most gratefully received.
