chris87 297
i have one lurcher that seems to go better with a small portion few hours before lamping and one the opposite so in my experience with these two can also depend on the dog as there all different Edited June 27, 2013 by chris87 1 Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
too many variables.....some folks go lamping for an hour or so and have only half a dozen runs others go all night and catch a hundred rabbits most are somewhere inbetween....early season and mild nights will need a different approach to midwinter subzero nights......is the dog really fit or just getting there....is it over or under weight ..........can't see any hard and fast rules.....imo you need to vary feeding accordingly 4 Quote Link to post

trigger2 3,129
a we mars bar work wonders true mate. imo you shouldnt need to carry a marsbar with you. seen dogs drop before double figures have been caught, mars bars are for me lol but sometimes will give the dog one tried feeding the dog a light meal a good few hours before never ran the same so seems to work for me Quote Link to post

TOMO 25,991
always fed my dogs early morning. never fed before running. always feed extra after lamping for recovery. anyone ever tried running round with a belly full of snap ? No body saying give it a big meal an hour or two befor running,,, feed it 6 hours befor running and it will be digested,, dogs have very quick digestion... I've done both and on big nights with loads of runs ,,, and without dowt the dogs looks better and run better , if fed 6-8 hours befor running,,,and every dog that I have flattened over the years has been a result of feeding the night befor... And here's another point,,,, I bet everyone of you that feed the night befor at say 10 pm,,,, I bet if you go for a daytime run the next morning,, won't alter your feeding habit,, I bet diamonds you still feed at night,,, therefor the dogs had 8 hours or so digesting its food 1 Quote Link to post
C Hall 552
Lampers tend to need a more fatty diet and have a bit weight about them if there going to be able to do a good shift, to high protein diet they struggle to hold condition. Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
a lot of it is just common sense ,.you don't want to run a dog on a full stomach ,......prior to work , a few hours before I would give half a bowl of carbs for the night ,..........and I always got water in the van and some energy source in my pocket , when I remember.....lol then a quick rub down / wash (if they need it) and some quality grub............and if worked hard a day or two of rest / light walk.....and out again......it sounds so ideal when I write it on here , but in real life this is my intentions and most of the time this is how it is,.........but aslong as the dog looks ok , usually grub down and look over them in the morning......lol ive been out with dogs that have had there normal meal before lamping(running on full stomach-not my decision and not my dogs , shocking when im told) and then when the dog misses everything , its the dogs thought ,..............when you play a game of rugby you prep the night before and then the following morning leading upto a game and it shows who preps and who don't in the lower devisions , no different to running dogs ,.they need prepping the same Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,444
Dogs that have cramps etc when lamping are usually not fit and dehydrate. I dont think a dog needs a full meal before lamping. If you feed breakfast and a snack that should be fine. Also its not the hours you are out its the runs the dog has and his level of fitness. Rabbit lamping in country where theres a lot of them requires real fitness to get good numbers. A dog needs quality food...you dont see Wolves eating pasta and rice.If the dogs fit and fed right he should go well without being fed before lamping. They enjoy a good feed when they get back and we usually put electrolites on the feed. Quote Link to post
