I used to set dozens of tunnel traps overs a massive area around a grouse moor. Stoat numbers were directly related to rabbit numbers, in areas with no rabbits I caught NO stoats. As areas of rabbits

i think they are regulated by prey numbers, not keepering, we had loads about here a few years back and plenty of rabbits, rabbit numbers are right down and so are the stoat numbers, works the same r

That's nice to here gnipper! can you catch me a couple?, also I read the page about the rabbit numbers making a difference but there is more rabbits here than ever so that cant be the reason. they are quite shy so mabe the population of people and traffic has made a difference.

Now, I'd have gone along with that, given, cause and effect notion. Once upon a time.

However, looking back? I've actually known enough places with plenty of rabbits and yet no stoats to talk of. Then, I've lived in places devoid of rabbits. Yet a stoat was nothing to write home about.

Round here, right now?

Rabbits: 0.

Otters: 1.

Stoats: 2.

Mink: 3.

Pine Marten: 10.

Badgers: Used to be everywhere. Then the govt. discreetly took steps ..... :whistling:

  • went looking yesterday and put some traps down just in case! I was told yesterday buy another farmer that when the gassed the rabbits on the railway line 20 + years ago he recons the killed most of the stoats at the same time!

that does sound right as that's where we saw most of them years ago..
