KittleRox 2,147
agree with frann and baw thats when boxing was exciting, ITV sat night boxing the whole family used to sit around watching, it was brilliant watching the build up to these fights and the fights themselves, Tyson was about the same time as well, can anyone remember the fight, it was either eubank or benn fighting an american, brutal fight and I think the american ended up permanently in a wheelchair ???

The sport itself hasnt changed at all theres still exciting fights and exciting fighters.............the way boxing is sold to the public is whats changed........back in the ,s anybody could watch boxing on normal telly for nothing, even those people not fully into the sport could watch it..............pay per view tv means only real boxing fans are going to fork out and watch it......................the sport was the same, the way we watched it is what was different.

Gerald Mclellend...........................I think the Eubank kid is too manufactured.......looks like he,s been fighting in front of a mirror all his life..............if the Billy Joe Saunders fight ever comes off i think we,ll see him in a proper slugfest.....and personally i dont think he,ll have the grit his ol man had. Frann 882
Yeah good point Gnasher, I didn't take into account the whole Pay Per View thing and how it used to be all free.
walshie 2,804
Eubank was an awful bighead, but his heart was in the right place. Years ago, my son wrote to Chris "Simply the Best" Eubank, Brighton, asking for an autograph with no return envelope or anything. 2 days later he got 3 colour photos all signed "To Ben with best wishes, Eubank." They're still framed here somewhere.

I know your a boxing guru mate and I'm just a mere mortal but your not going to tell me we have British boxers in the same calibre as Eubanks and Benn? Heavy weights like Bruno, American heavy weights like there was back then, Tyson, haglar etc, surely no? If there was, us mere mortals would be paying to watch it as I'm sure that was the idea behind pay per view, not to turn it into a members only club like it appears to be. walshie 2,804
Hagler was a middleweight, dummy.
baw 4,360
told you I wasn't the biggest boxing fan who got his ear chewed then? I know one thing, there are loads of folk like me who would pay to watch decent fights. I watched that bloke the other month, sung a song at the end. Wouldn't open my curtains to watch that again. You ask on here who would pay to watch Eubank take on benn, be a few
walshie 2,804
Evander Holyfield got his ear chewed. The bloke who "sung" was Tyson Fury. I've seen a few fights live and the atmosphere is so much better than watching it on telly, but I don't there are the characters around any more to draw the crowds of non-boxing types. I can remember waiting up all night to watch Tyson fight. Eubank would still beat Benn even now IMO. Benn has always been too bitter about Eubank to put his skills to good use. Not that i would want to meet either in a dark alley.
baw 4,360
Benns stare would floor me, he looks menacing. Can mind the two of them did a game show, warrior type thing competing against each other, that was good. I don't think its just there are no characters, I don't think the boxing is as good. Fury wouldn't last 2 seconds with Tyson, kind of puts us non puriests off.

I would think Joe Calzaghe would consider himself in the same calibre as Eubank/Benn yes............and we have 3 or 4 world class heavyweights today where we had 1 in the ,s................ As for Tyson/Hagler.....well personally id rate Floyd Mayweather far superior to both of them in terms of skill and ability.....not as exciting as Tyson no but different strokes for different folks. ...............How is pay per view a members only club its a free country you can watch what you like if you want to watch then pay if you dont.....then dont........no different to anything else really.
