walshie 2,804
I've read quite a few posts on here where people refer to their guns as female objects. Examples: "She's had a new scope fitted." or "I lightly oiled her." IMO a gun is a lump of metal and wood that does a job. i.e a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. You'd hardly say "Pass the hammer, and be careful with her, she's precious", so what's the difference? Only exception is Paulus seems to have an eye on my 1100 and I'm very protective of her. hutchey 147
from my point of view (very new to this in comparison with all you guys) is that those people who use their rifle/gun as part of their daily job view them as tools. the rest of us who are more hobbyists or part time keepers etc are more attached to our precious. no doubt others will have differing opinions but i'm going with the sit on fence as i refer to mine as "look after it, oil it, pass it up gently" etc (no gender specific) Quote Link to post

The one 8,529
Guns traps snares etc are tools for getting a job done Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
We all have a different agenda here, my guns are work tools that get used socially from time to time. They are tools to me, I get what I need to do my work, simple as. Just the same I look after them, that doesn't mean they are love objects, I keep my chisels sharp, my bait boxes clean, my traps in good working order, etc., that doesn't turn them into objects of love, but well functioning tools! rimmer 33
I use mine for work and pleasure, and have guns that i would never get rid of. but it is only the guns the rest of the kit is almost disposable. Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
I agree that guns have to be looked after and I clean mine and take care of them, but IMO they are still just a tool. For example my Tikka is probably exactly the same as everyone else's and if it "broke" I could buy another exactly the same. 1 Quote Link to post
kenj 131
As an ex instrument maker, I appreciate the workings of my rifles, the term "built like a gun" applies to this, but they are a functional lethal weapon at the end of the day and should be looked on as a tool to do a particular job. My rifles all have their uses, which overlap and have no duplicates, although it doesn't mean I don't have favourites. Quote Link to post
