Over The Moon With My New .177 97Kt.

Recommended Posts

Got my new 97kt through the post and stripped it within the hour, i half cocked it and it sounded like sh!t, rather rough and not smooth as my .22 97k.

I ordered a service kit from SFS and proceeded to polish all parts of the gun whilst waiting for my kit to arrive.

I found alot of rough edges.

3 nights of hard work and got everything gleaming like a new penny.

The last job before assembly was to strip the trigger and polish all the faces with a very fine hone till they shined with a mirror finish.

I then made a piston sleeve from a piece of nice shiny stainless sheet robbed from a travel mug that i don't use anymore.

Its a perfect fit for the beautiful spring from Tony, the top hat and spring guide are a nice neat fit on the spring too, the only thing i did not like was the synthetic grease that comes with the kit this is not a gripe its just that i only ever use bisley gun grease as i find its great stuff and stays where you put it, i know its expensive and can be got cheaper in another name, can't remember it though and a 5 quid pot does dozens of rifles.

After a bit of spring chopping and finishing of the assembled gun is making 11 fpe with hardly any recoil, passed the pellet on the turret test perfectly.

It now cocked super smooth, lavely!

So tonight i went to the perm and set up an A4 sheet and dot at 30 yards for a quick trial.

First 3 pellets landed about an inch to the right and up in a hole the size of a .22 pellet.

I was feeling rather excited already.

A half dozen pellets later and I can't miss.

Its really really accurate and not even slightly hold sensitive, dare i say its as easy as shooting a PCP.

A ten shot string on the chrono showed a brilliant brilliant 9 feet per second of difference, this spring is brilliant in a lightly tuned gun.

I'll get a couple of pics of the kit and gun plus i will put up a vid of the guns accuracy.

This baby is my go to now, I'll apologise to my 80s later :D

Still can't believe how accurate it is.

I strongly recommend anyone wanting a kit to shove one of Tony's exceptional springs in their gun.

Happy days.

Cheers lads.

Villaman, its nothing too difficult mate you just strip everything down including the trigger and polish everything to a mirror finish, the piston liner is measured and cut with tin snips and given a polish too.

I just chuck the piston and compression tube onto the lathe and polish up with very fine emery paper then wire wool.

I use a bit of garden bamboo with a lump of steel wool taped to the end of it to polish up the internal surfaces as they are spun on the lathe, saves a lot of elbow grease and achieves a really good mirror finish.

The barrel looked clean when you looked through it with a light on the other end but it was filthy.

I just cleaned it with a rod and patches along with barrel cleaning fluid.

The only fiddely job is getting the trigger parts polished up without rounding the edges or changing any of the face angles.

I started the trigger at 1800 and the next thing i knew it was 2100, totally absorbs me.

The cocking slots all had burrs on them and this was where the noise was coming from when i half cocked the gun, there was deep scratches on the compression tube that had to be polished out along with deburring the cocking slots.

The original spring was actually finished off at both ends which was a pleasant surprise, if anyone wants a spring for nowt let me know as i won't need it.

I don't have that many pics but i will put what i have up later and when i get time to do the same to my .22 97 i'll make a pic tutorial out of it so you can see what i do.

I'm saving up for a metal lathe as i want to tune an old 97 exactly as John Bowkett did in his write up some time ago.

The outcome should be amazing if i get his brilliant workmanship right.

I'm them planning on doing another 97 as per the Vmach way where they turn off the end of the compression tube and fit a delrin ring to the piston so it stays central running on the guns main tube, that plus a few buttons on the compression tube should achieve a silky smooth gun with hardly any recoil.

Bloody hell chris all i did on mine was a quick 2 mins with wirewool on the piston.. and its pretty nice to shoot..

No wonder yours is like a pcp after youve done all that stuff!! :D

I was happy enough with my rifle until i read this.. but now i realise its nowhere near its maximum potential! A shadow of the rifle it could be.

One quick question.. how fiddly is it to strip and reassemble a rekord trigger?? Been wanting to do mine but dont quite have the guts incase i cant get it back together.. and how/where do you grease it when your finished.. ??

Cheers SKoT

Morning SKot.

If you don't want to attempt it mate just post the trigger up to me and I'll tune it for you.

I'll pm my address, i can do it in an evening and have it back to you within a day or 2.

I set mines at 2 pounds and its beautiful once the bits are polished up.

Alternatively just send the whole gun up and i'll do the same to it as i have with mines.

Makes a helluva difference and i really enjoy working on them.

No fee just a favour to another keen airgunner pal.

No worries Yeah the Vmach is great. I like their piston liners and pistin seals. Them and Tonys service kit going into a gun soon for another trial. Chucking it down here. I went and stuck in new delrin buttons to my .22 v mach 80 and cleaned the barrel but both of the 80s are nowhere near as accurate as the 97s. Maybe if I practise hard enough I'll get their groups to be as good as the 97s.

all 3 of my guns are about the same accuracy wise, if im on good form

97 and 95 .177 and a .22 97 aswell..

but I can definitely shoot the kt97 best followed but the 97 sporter and then the 95 sporter

I think the weight is the main factor, that 95 flys all over the place cant keep it still LOL the secondary factor is probably the thumbhole and the adj. buttplate so the gun just sits better and more customed to my body shape if you know what I mean..? if your not comfy your not going to be shooting as good are you!!

but its still pellet on pellet at 35 yards like the other 2. I just really cant get on with it! :( which is a shame because its a brilliant gun

I've only just got my HW97kt .22 back from Tony yesterday after a stage 2 tune. Haven't had much of a chance to use it yet but I'll be at the range tomorrow to see what it can do. Got to love the 97KT's

did you get it posted mate..? did you get it delivered to your house or a local gunshop?

if you don't mind me asking

Not at all matey. I posted it down which was about fifteen quid but I drove the 90 mins to fetch it. That way you get to try it out and if anything needs adjusting Tony will do it there and then and if it's not grouping bang on it won't even get out the door. And then you can go shopping and buy stuff you didn't know you needed lol.
