Used to do loads of lamping rats mainly round stables and ditches, ditches are the easiest places as you can follow the rat underwater with the lamp. Just after dark I always found was the best time as the rats are hungry and less wary.

me and a pal used to do some grain barns after dark and found the best way was to put out a few places to hide local to the food and they would run for cover rather than home , the best was a few corrugated roof sheets along walls ,then you can just pick them off by lifting when your ready with the dogs , either put them flat on floor or up against the wall along with a flat board sandwiched against the corrugate to create tunnels . great sport , even tried videoing it a few times but its hard to keep the camera steady in all the excitement and its embarrassing to listen to the squeals of grown men on film :icon_redface:
