bullx100% 681
I get what the lad is saying to some extent. If lamping. . . . obviously a bit of a dumb idea! However, if you were out bushing and flushing in the day, and had a small, quick, nippy dog that often made the catch, had the knack of being in the right place at the right time etc, and could help put foxes in the bag that might have been missed. But could or would not dispatch on it's own. . . . . . would you leave it at home, or let it come out with the pack? I get what the lad is saying to some extent. bullx100% 681
and as for would i prefer own a catch dog or a dispatch dog (if i couldn't replace the lurcher with one that could do both) then id prefer have a catch dog and dispatch it my self than having a dog what couldn't catch it in the first place............ all pre ban talk and from a pest control point of view Quote Link to post
Wales1234 5,546
A couple of boys told me they use to have a whippet for lamping foxes just to catch his when they called him in and let a bullx go after to dispatch the fox pre ban not sure how true Quote Link to post

moonlighter 1,164
Some dogs have the knack of killing. Some don't. I had a saluki grey that would catch plenty of deer, but they always seemed to still be alive when I got there. Another dog I owned, always seemed to have killed them by the time I had got there. It's not really something you can train them! Quote Link to post
Casso 1,261
I Think there is two types of dog's for foxes. pre ban I used to have a dog that was only 21" and was by no means a a usual Fox dog. she wouldn't even go near one infill about two years old but she then became over the next few years a excellent catch dog, but once caught after 30 seconds would come off and let the other bigger dog finish. Not interested at all, would never rag a dead Fox either, anybody ever own a dog like that? I really found her quite usefully..... all pre banDogs make themselves social to fit with the group dogs living together become like two halves of the same being , each perfaring different things ,what one wants to other don't and so it goes , they can thus learn to live together I had the same with two mutts before, terrier bitch would hunt fox all day right up to the point where the running dog made contact , then she showed not one ounce of interest in the same fox thereafter , I will add that the two were very tuned in to each other 2 Quote Link to post

FlyMyGirl 147
Likes been said I would rather have a dog that can catch them and I can finish the job rather than a dog that can't catch them but could finish the job! Quote Link to post
Guest thebigdog
catch and dispatch dog ffs. if one cant do it on it's own, the only thing for it, is a lead earring Quote Link to post
FlyMyGirl 147
So a dog that is used mainly on edible game but can and will catch and hold a fox for the owner to dispatch humanely, should have a lead earing? Why would you need a dispatch dog as well would you not have been capable of humanely dispatching the fox your self? 2 Quote Link to post

FlyMyGirl 147
I think he was trying to get at that he had a dog that was never intended to be just a fox dog, but could and would catch and hold a fox. To me I would have a dog that could run everything, maybe not kill a fox single handed but would certainly catch one, over an out and out fox dog any day but that's only what suits me and what suits me is what I shall run :-) 2 Quote Link to post
