Deutsch Drahthaar

Recommended Posts

Deutsch Drahthaar is the German name for what we call the GWP in Germany they are just called German wirehaired no pointer in the title. I have had a couple and once you can get into how they tick your fine, but getting there is a bit of a shock to the system. They are not every ones cup of tea but I have never owned a more versitile dog.

On point when working with the hawk.

A DD has to meet a lot of strict tests before it is allowed into a breeding program.Breeding is strictly controlled by the breed club. It will have had to be assessed tracking, hunting retrieving even its conformation and coat. It is very much a all round working dog. Over here any gwp can be mated to any gwp.

Since 2013 you can bring a dog over to the uk when it's been vacinated and wormed and you can show for it in it's passport.

Bringing one over shouldn't be a big problem. I think €360 is quite a fair price, a ferry crossing is €100 from calais to Dover, driving from and to both harbours with current petrol prices isn't cheap as well.

A GW(P) can be had for €350 from working parents but really wouldn't know how much work. Before buying one I'd really look into where to get one! They have become quite a popular breed amongst the posh and popular who like the hunting/country lifestyle which certainly isn't benificial to the breed.

Ive been offered young dogs from Germany from people who trial them, some run on 2 and might intend to keep the better. I regret not taking the trip, getting the time to make the trip wasnt possible. Got a young brittany that is doing what I want, but the drahthaar has got extra minerals that I could use for some tasks the brittany very probably wont be upto, we'll see.

There is a breeder in england that breed import lines (kimmax), or can have pups imported out of drathaar blodlines,

All there dogs carry the same blood its just because of the strict restrictions they carn't call them drathaar

I must admitt i was very impressed with what ive read about them lately

i have a keeper friend who has one, great looking thing im suprised i dont see more of them on the shoot as we often get the germans over
