Bunny Boiler 177
Shouldn't really use hay or straw. Its poor bedding material in that it harbours parasites, causes irritation (such as dust inhalation, bits getting caught in their eyes etc.), and generally just should never be used. Use a dust reduced wood shaving. Even if this doesn't solve the eye problem, it will definitely help with your ferrets general health. Atb, BB Edited June 18, 2013 by Bunny Boiler Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Get some beaphar anti parasite spot on for ferrets will rule out mites or anything like that , Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Ferret drippy dick syndrome? Vac hobs are known to pick up diseases when passed around as a stud. Poor little f****r. Might want to clean him up though, stop the flies laying eggs in there. Quote Link to post
Guest vin
I also would give him a rub with some antibacterial cream/lotion/potion etc etc on the eye area.. and especially this time of year i usually give the hutches and bedding a squirt round with diamiticus earth powder..i give the ferts a good dusting down with it every now and then,.it helps keep the little tiny flies down. lor123 12
that may be fungal, the thing about hay and straw is it harbour fungal spours and the reason i say it may be is because if he had even a slight open wound like small bite or nick well then when you put him on straw or hay if fungal spours gets in the wound wont heal so with anti bac and then apply fungal cream because you cant go wrong because it will heal a whole load of wounds just like that and even ringworm which is a fungal infection commonly found in hay and straw . also the diamiticus earth powder mentioned above is good idea. i myself spray a citronella around the walls of the stable i keep mine whatever works for you but you need to keep the flies down with an open wound like that untill it starts to heal. even if it is allergie you wont lose out by applying the creams. atb Edited June 19, 2013 by lor123 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Don't lend out ferrets! I know it is nice to help others out, but unless you are absolutely sure of the hygiene, and health of the jills he goes to he could pick up all sorts of problems. We've used straw since the year dot. Never had a problem. But use barley straw, not wheat, as it contains much less dust and irritants. Diamataceous Earth is excellent and non toxic: kills mites and fleas by dehydrating them as the tiny particles get under the scales of insects with exoskeletons and makes them lose their body fluids 1 Quote Link to post
