roan 4
a handy sized proven working deerhound over a greyhound bitch will generally produce a good all round lurcher maybe not the absolute best on any one quarry but a jack of all trades and the only limit being the amount of work you can put in front of them,,,if you want a fen dog get a saluki cross bull for foxetc,,,,but if you want a dog to take 10 or 20 rabbits in a night then course a hare or 2 in bad ground or other the following day and still be game for a fox on the way home then the first cross is always a good choice but they can take quite a bit longer than the average to get going and are generally not speciallity dogs,,, also can be quite adept on larger game...the main issue is to pick your deerhound carefully,,,thats my advice from past experience anyway its certainly not written in stone some may not do fox mind you havent seen this myself others ,may have not too much interest in rabbits even though they have the ability and some may be a bit short on a hare in massive ground ive seen deerhounds pass excellent first crosses on hares after a long couse but this was exteremly tough ground which the deerhounds seem to do well ,,,but generally speking this cross works Quote Link to post
mistwalker 0
Currently running a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 deerhound out of Dave Platts' stuff. Yes, she took longer than my other dogs to start, but once she started - she started! At 28", she's not a great rabbiting specialist, but she gets a few lamping. I would imagine that if there were no ban she would be quite good on the hares around here, have the renowned deerhound hatred of foxes and maybe even put in the odd good show on roe deer Nature-wise (now, this is something I don't hear much of when a particular cross is mentioned) she's perfect for me. Laid back at home, likes her own space, gentle, thinks for herself, likes playing like an 8 wk old pup - at 3yrs of age and uses her head when hunting. Granted, she may not burst into top gear straight away, she tends to trot at first watching which way the quarry's running then setting off on a line to intercept it but when she gets into it, she gives 100% There's another hunter on here has her litter sister, who matured a bit quicker and I've seen the proof - she does what needs to be done All in all, this is the cross I'll be keeping from now on. stevemac 434
Ive got 2 and I love them deerhound x greyhound first cross bitch and how knows how many generations of this cross are behind the dog its any ones guess. Anyway the are great on large game and adequite on small game, they have good stanima and even after a hard run recover quite quickly. Stevemac Quote Link to post
roan 4
really nice looking bitch theres a first cross on the coursing deerhound thread my mates bitch i hunt with him all through the year absolute cracker unrealkick off and determination the deerhound dog she was breed off was a good hare dog and good on everything put in front of him in his day Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Andy Baron used to breed some cracking 3/4 grey 1/4 Deerhounds My mate had several off him and they were all fast, determined dogs that took everything that got up in front of them. The only drawback was that they werent really hunters, they would only take off on a fresh scent now and then, but not everyone looks for that in a dog, they certainly excelled at everything else anyway Quote Link to post
Bacchus 0
Best cross is a 3/4 grey 1/4 deerhound to a 5/8 3/8 bull grey - see classifieds for more info on pups Quote Link to post

The only drawback was that they werent really hunters, they would only take off on a fresh scent now and then, but not everyone looks for that in a dog, they certainly excelled at everything else anyway That can be the case with most three quarter breds, of any type, Ive seen three quarter bred dxg`s thrown so much to the greyhound, one that got third fastest time at a time trial for greyhounds, others, Ive seen throw to the deerhound so much they were practically indistinguisable from pure bred deerhounds. Ive ran 2 half crosses in my time, and these had great noses, my pure breds all had good noses, and they lurchers that I used for decades were all from a deerhound base line, and, had great noses.. Dont forget, pure deerhound had alsorts put into them in their distant past, including collies, so a bad nose in three quarter breds comes from the greyhound, do the reverse mating and poor nose will not be so prominant, but you wont have the same overall versatility Quote Link to post

Guest joe ox
Some good advice and information off some knowledgable dog men on here. Ive always liked the deerhound x greyhound but never had the pleasure to own one, apart from a bitsa lurcher with a tiny fraction in but dont think that counts. Ive never seen a 1/2 or 3/4 cross at work. Edited August 18, 2007 by joe ox Quote Link to post

Ive never seen a 1/2 or 3/4 cross at work. Hey Joe, your bitza with a bit of deerhound in it was probably a better all rounder than the half or three quarter cross..depends what the rest of it was of course..Ive had a few bitzas (god I hate that name) all from deerhound crosses, with a touch of collie and these were rakers..I dont like collie first crosses as a rule, but have seen some very good d/g x c/g`s and dogs bred from these..I would only compare half crosses or three qharter breds against other half breds or three quarter breds, further matings to these does, I believe, give a greater diversity in the pups..and these usually knock the spots of first and second crossers when talking about all-rounders Quote Link to post
