weasle 1,119
Yes put your ear to ground you can hear a ferret scratching at a rabbit. Here's a experiment for you bury some rabbit guts a foot under ground(I will give you some if you want) If your dogs are like mine they will dig them straight out as will foxes,Next day bury them 3 foot they won't even scrape the soil neither will the foxes, because they cannot smell them. so how can blood hounds follow scent that's maybe a fortnight old for miles and miles? sometimes for days as in a few cases in the USA. i do believe there's a lot we don't understand about scent or the way a dog uses it senses just to throw one in on scent how deep can a search and rescue dog locate using scent ?. That's a good one....but would they ever be searching air tight compacted soil,or building rubble avalanche ect with air pockets? Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
if you ask me ,.................scent has nothing to do with stamina,.................lol I think hearing and scent rely on each other in a dog ,.............they are balanced out so well that a dog uses each one when it needs too........and no one will prove different ..... bird 9,898
Defo think it's possible to increase the stamina in the dog but as Socks said different dog breeds have different anatomical features that give them an edge. Seen different breeds go from slags to athletes just by pushing them that little bit harder each day but there is always a ceiling. spot on, with any dog the more work=runs it gets it will improve on its stamina, but as above there all got a limit, (there) limit, and even in the same litter , it will differ with all the pups from the same breeding. Ive all ways thought that what ever breed you use in the mix of a lurcher ,collie,saluki,deerhound,..... ,you hoping that gene comes through, but when put back to a greyhound, you just dont really know .As greys are sprinters 1st, stamina maybe 2nd-3rd on the list. Even with 1xs what ever the other breed, on paper its 4 1/8s greyhound and 4/8s ? but it could carry the gene more of the greyhound you just dont know. Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
Tell you what, you need some stamina to read this thread Well, I am all out of puff,...FFS... The bottom line is,...'talk is dirt cheap',...and all the theorising in the world won't make up for a long hard night,.. of practical.... I remember hearing the same script decades ago,...and I've lost count of the men who have said, 'My dog has got amazing stamina, resilience, fantastic strike',.etc,.etc,..and I would love to see how he goes on a place that is teeming with rabbits'.. My answer today, would be the same as it was back then,...'Well,..put your troubled mind to rest, once and for fecking all and go out and try it,..and then you will know'.... I've regularly killed rabbits under the lamp,.night after night, after bleeding night,.all through the Autumn, the Winter and early Spring and trust me,..it gets gutty and takes some doing from both man and dog,..and although it is obvious that stamina, fitness and determination play a big part,...you have still got to have a base desire,..or you will both crumble All the best, Phil. Good thread,, you were due though Simmo,,,,,,, Ha For once I was in the right place at the right time, will never have another so knew..Still had to get up every morning and go to work to pay for it. Who's most dedicated the lads supplementing there dole with a bit of meat,Or the working lads that despite having to get up early every morning to go to work,do there best by there dogs getting them out 3-4 nights a week then getting up half hour early to gut the rabbits. I had very little work last winter ferreted 3-5 days a week lamped when ever it was worth it,and I tell you it was fantastic, life how it should be. But It didn't mean I was any better than the lads working, doing there bit. Mind by feb I was sick at the sight of rabbits Quote Link to post
