Dog Or Bitch To Live With A Dog

Recommended Posts

Since the pups young it shouldn't really be a problem until the pup hits maturity and tries to be boss.

When I had two dogs the terrier who was younger bullied my boxer from he was about 1 year old, the terrier was never done picking fights, the other male never fought back but the terrier still continued to bully the heck out of him. Sometimes I wish the boxer had of turned round and put him in his place! It depends on the two dogs personalities, some will live together the very best and some won't, doesn't matter if they are both dominant characters or not, the dominant one will always be at the other.

I now have the same terrier and a lurcher bitch, they get on like two peas in a pod lol. I've never really known of a bitch and dog to not be able to live together. It is a hassle keeping them apart when she comes into heat though.

Surely that's when fights kick off? Is in not better to have a more dominant dog and no competition for top dog?

A lot depends on the temperaments and types of dog. It doesn't matter how dominant you are over your dogs. If you expect them to live in the same space they need to be fairly laid back animals. We have two big male dogs at the moment, and a heap of bitches. The younger male is submissive to the older, but one is always kennelled if we are out: even though they are both good mates, I wouldn't risk leaving them loose together, especially when there are bitches in season locked up in the shed.

Have plenty of bitches which can be kennelled together, and some which can't. It's knowing and reading the signs between your dogs that is important. If I had one male dog and wanted to get another dog I'd be sure to get one from genuinely chilled out lines, and not risk leaving them loose together until the young one is of an age to have settled right down and is happy with his place in the world. Nothing worse than a teenage layabout with testosterone fuelled energy! That is generally the age when things go wrong, when the youngster is feeling like he wants to take on the world, though of course they are not all like that.

I guess it depends on how good you are at picking up on signals from dog body language, and knowing when to intervene and when to let things ride, knowing what is normal behaviour and what is a sign of trouble to come.

If the existing dog is a bit of a handful when it comes to meeting strange dogs that may not translate into aggressive behaviour at home at all: my OH's big dog is horrible with strange dogs, but very tolerant at home.

it will kick off sooner or later, with males (norm) they find out with each other who top dog, and then most times it sorted. With dog+ bitches living together , most cases the bitch is the boss, even if you had big male and small bitch , she will still be boss. bitches together can be more of a prob i think, than dogs together.Iwill at sometime have a little bust up with my 2 males, as 1 10 month old ,and the other is 6 year old.At the moment its just play fighting with them, but my pup will (maybe) next year want to be top dog, and as there is a big size differnce with them, it might be the pup top dog.But they may not ever fight you just dont really know .
