First Day Of The Season !!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

That's it mate, from the tidal Exe I've caught, bass, sea trout, flounder, eels, carp, bream, roach, dace, chub, grayling, brown trout, mullet ( oh and ive lost a few salmon after a couple of jumps and a run about the 2lb line gives in lol) there's no barbel there Though, but there are huge pike if you fish for them. It's a place when you fish it you have no idea what's coming, I love that....

If I get to organise a THL match down here I'll put it on that stretch, there's loads of room and it on our local ticket, I know the club would allow it...

Good luck on the barbel mate, let us know how it goes..

Anyone out and about on the rivers for course this weekend?   i'm all packed up and itching to go I can't wait for the smell of halibut pellets and the odd chub or barbel. i'll take a camera and tak

I'm a wye man too, never had a double but not too far off.   I normally only fish the same peg on the same stretch all season. I love those summer evenings on the river bank a cuppa tea in one hand

Started fishing my local the river soar for a few carp ended up with one little skimmer in middle of the night so pretty pissed that woke me up lol   So I got all me gear together and drove 20mins

Normally fish for good quality chub and roach on the opening day with roving tactics, however, as I'm now on the committee for our club I've had my arm twisted to fish the match on the river tomorrow morning (draw at 07:30). We've already been out clearing the bankside and putting in the pegs. I'll be up against the match guys with their poles and whips whereas I'll be on the centrepin and stick and may switch between an avon quiver. Possible tactic maybe to fish bigger baits for some decent chub. See what the weather is doing tomorrow and get ready for the river season, whooppee!!!

Tight lines

Is that on the Stour Chris?

You should come and fish our little charity match on the Trent, the way you fish is exactly why we wanted to set something up on running water... Keep up the old traditions mate

I've caught a few of those river carp, never a big one 10lb max but they go like trains,

My uncle and a couple of cousins are the last of 2 boats to have the license to net for Salmon in the upper Estuary at Topsham, they've had huge carp and bream in there nets especially after a bit of rain.... I've seen 2 fish a couple of mile upstream from there, and they were high 20's maybe 30's huge river carp... My old mate had a few but didn't let a lot on lol... The biggest pike I've heard of was just under 29lb....

Good luck in your match mate

Hi Kev,

Its on the upper part of the river Parrett in Somerset. I just this minute uploaded a map onto the club website (www.stoke-sub-hamdonaa.co.uk) although I haven't yet put on the actual banks covered although we do have rights to most of them from the co-operation of eleven or more landowners. Last year the club had a total membership of just over fifty and is open to anyone. The annual fees are £15 which I think is good value as the local carp pools round here charge £7 per day!! We are a not for profit club and all the money gets put back into the club either in improvements, stocking (if required) and insurance through the Angler's Trust. I think a lot of anglers have got so used to the lakes and have completely forgotten the thrill and unexpected catches from the rivers, yes it is harder but I think the rewards when you get it right are just reward for all that watercraft that you eventually learn. When I had more disposable income and time before the kids arrived I used to love taking the hour and half drive up to Ross-on-Wye to fish the Wye for barbel and pike. Often you would see or get smashed up by big powerful carp that used the strength of that river to their advantage. Hopefully get up there again in the future, check out the Wye and Usk Foundation as they do a cracking job getting anglers access to some fantastic sections. I now fish close to home (10 minutes walk) and also have so many other pursuits such as ferreting, shooting, beating, kayak fishing and longnetting (I have a fairly understanding wife plus 13 weeks holiday - perk of being a teacher I suppose), and I just ordered my Rob Allen Speargun to start going for bass of the devon and dorset coasts this summer.

All best for the new season.

i will be going on the north yorkshire swale later on today and fish till after dark for the barbel, its only 10 minutes from my house, so ive got a few spots where i know the barbel will be for sure, my biggest barbel from the swale is 12lbs 08ozs the record for the swale is 14lbs 01oz back in 2007, I've been checking the river out up until yesterday and it is just about right, so fingers crossed,

I've got the rest of the week off work too, and so i will be going down to the a1 pits stretch of the Trent for a day or two as well and a session or two on the nidd near wetherby is on the cards too, will let you know how i get on

HOW DID IT GO GENTS ?............

I managed two cub to 4lb 8 and a barbel to 7lb 4. i didn't fish all night so not a bad start the weather held off too. I spent a while watching a barn owl out hunting at dusk just to round off a superb trip. it still surprises me how close you get to nature when your sat at the end of your rod

Your wife sounds very similar to mine Chris, it's nice to keep yourself busy but you don't need a wife moaning about it, I've not fished the Parret, I've fished the Tone a fair bit around Taunton, had some good days on there... I'll try and get up for a session on the Parret sometime....

Now onto today.. R.A.W, the wildlife was fantastic, the fishing was so bad me and Fin ( my boy) spent half an hour at least on a stretch below watching the salmon jumping in the weir pool, it rained from 5-30 until we left at 1 and there was a strong wind blowing downstream... It was utter crap, I picked the wrong stretch and blanked... Original plan was the tidal but taking my 7 year old first time on the river, it's not easy fishing so I decided to sit on a stretch which is normally good for the bream, I fished the tip so I could help my lad on the waggler.... Not the best introduction to river fishing for the lad, by 8 he was curled up under the brolly sound asleep whilst I sat in the rain and got soaked lol..

An evening for the bass this week then back on the river Sunday... Might leave the lad home and get on the tidal lol

Well done Ry sounds like a nice session

There was a salmon angler on the other bank, I may have had a rod with me but I ended up just watching lol..

The end if the pool was full of mullet too, but the next bit if fishing is a bit further down,

Fin is a good lad, he was casting and baiting for himself today.. Come the end if the year he'll be set I'd say.. He didn't want to get up at 5, but fair play to him the thought of missing out was too much... I said to him later I bet you wished you'd stayed home now, he said no dad I'd still rather be here than home with Isla ( his little sister lol)..

Well the first day of the season out of the way. In my first ever proper match on the river the good news I didn't blank and I made it to tenth position, the bad news there were ten of us fishing! It was a very wet five hour match and the wind downstream was not favourable for my centrepin and stick approach, I think I may have to go to the 'dark side' and get a short pole or whip like the winning guys were using. Weights throughout were low even though the river is full of good fish and maybe due to a combination of the weather and/or the fish are still pre-occupied with all the natural food sources (there were various hatches happening today). Still it was a good day out and will help me learn more about this part of the sport.

Later this evening the local farmer asked me to see if I could sort out some rabbits that were hammering his oats in a field by the road. So I had half an hour to spare before helping the missus with all the ironing. Borrowed my old man's HW97K which I zeroed up yesterday. Crept round the barn and a full grown rabbit hopped out fifteen yards away, single shot and his was down, looked to my left and another sat out at forty yards, reloaded, second shot and it dropped down stone dead, happy with that.

Now to start looking seriously at this whip/pole fishing method.
