Ive lost count of the amount of times ive stood and watched a farmer working his Collie, especially on the hills. The way they cover the ground, tirelessly for hours at a time, working on minimal commands

I worked as a hill shepherd for many years when I was a youngster...I worked sheep and cattle with my collies and also hunted them alongside my lurchers and terriers...and lamped rabbits with them too

Personaly,..   I think you ether get on with herding dogs,.or you don't...

i have never understood why someone would want to put a farm collie over there lurcher, all they do is chase car tyres and stalk, there to clever for the worling lurcher to put a pure one in the mix and its been proven as theres never been a good dog with a sire as a pure working collie, iam sure plenty will now try to tell us theres a good un?

Hancock tried it and you all slate his dogs,a nut from down this way invented it with him but when they fell out he tried to push the australian cattle dog mix and then never worked either?

so please dont try any more to tell us to cross our good working lurchers with farm collies.

what a load of pish!

A working collie is hunting ... In its brain it is herding the sheep towards its master or alpha male as wild dogs would do in the wild so harnessing that and altering it your needs has got to be better than using a pet show type that has never been out in the field using its instincts .... You are correct in the fact that there are manic collies out there and you should give them the biggest swerve possible ... You also don't want to lean to much towards the trial only dogs as these are bred not to grip the sheep as that's instant disqualification in a trial so in essence the dogs are bred NOT to use their mouths .... If you are looking for a collie stud then you need to look for a well balanced working collie that's temperament is spot on ... A dog that has proven his worth as a working dog with good breeding behind it .......

to get the sort of collie you would want to use jim I think you would have to get one and bring it on as by reading the posts they no one has this sort of dog about them, them collies that do the fly ball thing would be half right as they run up and down the track and have to catch a ball witch is going prity quick so it can use its mouth as well,,,

There's a huge difference between a hardy hill type collie and the mechanical/robotic trialling type seen working and percieved to be laid back, very steady and waiting on commands...

I herded 800 blackfaced ewes on a hill farm and take it from me my dogs had to be full on when needed...certainly didn't make 'em bad collies...takes a fair hardy old dog to stop a blackie ewe when her head's down and her tail's birling...full on's just what's required...

If I was looking for a collie stud...I'd opt for a hill type collie, tall and rangy who's grafting day in day out...without complaining...if given they chance this type are pretty effective on other things.

I was speaking to a farmer friend the other day who was moaning about one of his dogs 'cause "the b*****d's always off on the deer"...that'd do me...just nicely

Fujis don, was bred of a collie that worked stock, as far as i'm aware.

There are a vast range of collie types out there. My pick would be either one of our leggy hill types, tough as old boots, or one of the working cattle dogs we get, a dog that can bully cattle about from the front end, should have the balls to deal with most other stuff.

And most decent farm collies I have seen about here, are not shy in dealing with vermin around the farm.

With regard to your mates collie, how do you know it wasnt from working lines a few gens back?

As Sock said herding is just hunting in a subliminal sense...hunting without the 'end game' so to speak...seen collies take it too far...the killing instinct is just simmering below the surface and the results have been catastrophic...if I had time I would be happy to bring on a collie dog pup and hunt it like a lurcher...I have done it in the past...with success...the problem could easily lie in the fact that if it don't look like a greyhound lots of folk just ain't interested...good thread this Jim...

I have a collie here similar to describe jim. Sturdy, very driven. Works stock of all types and not frightened to grab hold. Works with the lurchers and deals with vermin around the farm. The downfall is temperament. Strung out! Got mithered into using him at stud to a tidy grew type against my better judgment. To pups were good solid graft dogs, but their temperament was not what you would want to live or work with. Never again

I agree with Borderscot. A determined strong willed hill collie. proven mentally and physically
