I have a 3/4 working welsh collie cross he his a really good working dog he's stead until he sees a bunny then he's off and best of all round the house he claim and just sleeps

There's a few collies about already working bunnys and other game they don't suit everybody but no dog does. Its one of these dogs id use if I was ever going to go down that route....

I have a collie here similar to describe jim. Sturdy, very driven. Works stock of all types and not frightened to grab hold. Works with the lurchers and deals with vermin around the farm. The downfall is temperament. Strung out! Got mithered into using him at stud to a tidy grew type against my better judgment. To pups were good solid graft dogs, but their temperament was not what you would want to live or work with. Never again

 

I agree with Borderscot. A determined strong willed hill collie. proven mentally and physically

I did in the winter, why is it always about the collie, the working ability of the bull or deerhound or saluki or bedlington or whatever never seems to require the same level of scrutiny?

It's a thread started by someone with an obvious knowledge of collies and collie xs and most of the posters who have had something worthwhile to add are kinda like minded...none of the saluki, bull or deerhound lads have contributed...sure there's been threads "scrutinizing" these types in the past...just a discussion...that's all...

I think the collie crosses are pretty damn neat dogs. If I had to take one I would most definately take one over the deerhound, sazuki, whippet, beddy types. I dont wanna start any arguement cuz this is a good thread but thats just the way I see it. I actually believe in the collie cross especially if they are linebred lamping types.

Because unlike the other pure breds. Only the colie can stand up to the scrutiny. I have collies and use them but I wouldn't want a pup off one of them. Well not a halfx lurcher anyways as id rather go to a well proven colliex line than the pure. But if I did want a halfx then a hunting collie used and proved on game is the only way id go

As Sock said herding is just hunting in a subliminal sense...hunting without the 'end game' so to speak...seen collies take it too far...the killing instinct is just simmering below the surface and the results have been catastrophic...if I had time I would be happy to bring on a collie dog pup and hunt it like a lurcher...I have done it in the past...with success...the problem could easily lie in the fact that if it don't look like a greyhound lots of folk just ain't interested...good thread this Jim...
